1965 Le Mans 24h, Alfa Romeo TZ2. Nowadays we have escape roads and when a car comes to a halt, it’s being salvaged by the track marshals during a (virtual) safety car. In 1965 things were different: At the outside of Mulsanne corner was a large sand trap and when a car got caught, you had to dig it out your self while the race just went on. This happened to Teo Zeccoli in the first lap. It was so warm, he even took off his racing suit when trying to get the car free from the sand.

1972 Targa Florio, Alfa Romeo 33TT3. In 1972 the 5-liter sports cars had disappeared from the world championship. The fight would be among the 3-liter prototypes. In an attempt to improve the Tipo 33, Alfa Romeo changed the concept. The V8 engine remained but gained about 20 hp in power. The 6-speed gearbox was replaced by a 5-speed version to gain weight. Also new were the Goodyear tires. The biggest change was that Alfa abandoned the aluminium monocoque chassis and turned to a space frame (Telaio Tubolare). The car was approximately 50 kg lighter than the 1971 version but didn’t win. Second at the Targa Florio was one the best results.

1972 Le Mans 24h, Alfa Romeo 33TT3. Autodelta, the Alfa Romeo works team, brought 3 new Alfa Romeo 33TT3 to Le Mans. Ferrari skipped the Le Mans race and now their biggest rival was Matra that was present with 4 cars. Also some privateer Porsches and the Bonnier Lola joined the fight. It never was a fight; the Matra’s were just too quick. In the end, the winning car from Pescarolo and Hill, was 10 laps ahead of another Matra. Third was the old Joest Porsche 908 LH and the only surviving Alfa Romeo finished 4th, 39 laps behind. This #17 car from last year’s winner Helmut Marko and Vic Elford retired with a broken clutch.

1975 Monza 1000 km, Alfa Romeo 33TT12. 1975 Was a year in between of two era’s: Matra quit after 3 wins at Le Mans in a row and the new turbocharged Renault was quick but not yet reliable. The Willy Kauhsen Alfa Romeo’s won the world championship with ease. Lafitte and Merzario winning three times together. A drivers title did not exist, otherwise it would have been for Arturo.

1996 ITC Championship, Alfa Romeo 155 V6 Ti. The DTM championship was very popular and the organizer changed it in International Touring Car Championship (ITC). De series expanded to races in other European countries such as Italy, France, UK, Finland and Portugal but also included races at Interlagos and Suzuka. The costs were much too high and it was the last season of the DTM in this format. It would last to 2000 before a new series was launched. Gabriele Tarquini was another former F1 driver that raced the DTM/ITC. The Alfa Corse cars raced with support from Martini in the white Alfa’s. JAS Motorsport, Tarquini’s team, had Martini sponsoring on their red car for the Mugello race. The other races, Tarquini raced in silver and red and managed a win at Silverstone.
