#078 Aston Martin GT

Aston Martin is an English luxury brand that produces GT’s that are also used in motorsports. They also have a Formula One team and are currently (January 2025) developing the Valkyrie Hypercar for Le Mans and the World Championship. The brand had a special bond with Gulf and these model can also be found in one of the early collections that I published on this website, but these will be in this collection also.

1977 Le Mans 24h, Aston Martin DBS V8. This very exotic Aston Martin V8 was developed by Robin Hamilton and started its competition career already in 1974 as a group 4 car. In 1977, the engine now delivered a fine 520 hp, which was 100 less than the Group 5 Porsche 935’s. So Hamilton decided to enter the car in the GTP-category and was allowed a wider rear spoiler. The team narrowly qualified on the last row but finished Le Mans in 17th position and took 3rd in GTP behind an Inaltera (Rondeau) and WM.

1979 Le Mans 24h, Aston Martin DBS V8 turbo. After a year absence, Robin Hamilton returned to Le Mans in 1979. The car had gone through quite a transformation, the most important being turbocharged. It was more aerodynamic, gained power, but also weight. It qualified 7 seconds faster than in 1977, but still was the last car on the grid. The car failed to finish due to an oil leak.

2006 Mil Milhas, Aston Martin DBR9. The Mil Milhas (Thousand Miles) is the most important endurance race in South-America. In 2007 it would even count for the Le Mans Endurance Series. In 2006 it was won by the Cirtek Aston Martin DBR9. Another DBR9 was entered by local team Capuava Racing but that only ran during practice sessions, which is a pity because their driver line-up was spectacular.

2008 Le Mans 24h, Aston Martin DBR9 GT1. Vitaphone Racing was invited for Le Mans because of their FIA GT driver and team Championships. Their Maserati MC12 however was not homologated for the GT1 class at Le Mans. So Vitaphone teamed up with Strakka Racing that had no invitation and thus we saw the Strakka Aston Martin in the bright green Vitaphone colors.

2010 Le Mans 24h, Aston Martin DBR9 GT1. Young Driver is one of the Aston Martin Racing supported teams. The name Young Driver does sound like a junior team, but uses very experienced racing drivers such as Peter Kox and Tomas Enge. It was the favorite for a class win in GT1, but at Le Mans nothing is certain. Technical problems delayed the team and it only finished 22nd, it still was 3rd in GT1 but that was mainly because there were only a few cars left in its final year.

Aston Martin at the Nürburgring

2008 Nürburgring 24h, Aston Martin Vantage N24. Aston Martin races the Prodrive GT1 DBR9’s at Le Mans. CEO Ulrich Bez wanted to race more civil versions too, so he entered two near standard V8 Vantages “N24” for the 24 hour race at the old Nürburgring. Both cars reached the finish; Yellow “Rose” finished 18th overall and won the SP8 category. Green “Kermit” with Bez at the wheel finished 27th.

GT3 is the booming category that has been adapted by many racing series all over the world, starting with endurance races at Nürburgring and the FIA GT Championship. Now it’s also used in the USA (GTD), Japan (GT300), DTM and since 2024 even at Le Mans as replacement for the much more expensive GTE cars.

2010 Spa-Francorchamps 24h, Aston Martin DBRS9. However, the 24 hours race at Spa-Francorchamps wasn´t part of any championship, it attracted a large number of participants of good quality. Many exotic GT´s from GT2 (FIA GT and Le Mans Series and GT3 (Euro series and VLN) appeared at the start. This Belgian Aston Martin was one of the most beautiful cars present.

2011 Spa-Francorchamps 24h, Aston Martin DBRS9. Organiser Stephane Ratel struck gold again. The Blancpain Endurance Series for GT3 cars has become very popular in short time, we see grids full of exotic sports cars. Highlight of the season is the Spa 24-hour race at Spa-Francorchamps, where double points are being awarded. No points however for this beautiful Gulf sponsored Aston Martin DBRS9 that failed to finish.

2014 Nürburgring 24h, Aston Martin Vantage V12. The Nürburgring 24h race is home ground for the German makes which usually win: Audi in 2012; Porsche in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2011; Mercedes in 2013 and BMW in 2005 and 2010. Another brand that is always present is Aston Martin, either with the near standard Rapide or this awesome GT3 which looks much like the GTE version used at Le Mans. Major difference is that this car has the lovely sounding V12 under the bonnet where the GTE version has the more raw sounding V8. The Vantage finished 5th overall.

GT2 / GTE replace the GT1

2010 Le Mans 24h, Aston Martin V8 Vantage. British JMW Motorsport entered this great looking Aston Martin V8 Vantage in the GT2 category. Its livery was the result of a design competition. Unfortunately the car crashed out of the race quite early, which is a pity as it was one of the most beautiful cars to see and to hear.

2011 Le Mans 24h, Aston Martin V8 Vantage. Aston Martin’s attention went to the disastrous AMR-One project. But in GTE two British cars were entered. The Gulf AMR car in GTE-Am and the Jota entry in GTE-Pro. Unfortunately both retired, it just wasn’t Aston Martin’s year.

2015 Le Mans 24h, Aston Martin V8 GTE. In 2015 Prodrive Aston Martin entered another Art Car; the livery gives the suggestion that the car is out of focus and thus gives it more speed according to the artist Tobias Rehberger. Unfortunately it didn’t reach the finish.

2016 Le Mans 24h, Aston Martin V8 GTE. The 2016 Aston Martin V8 GTE had an update which was visible in the huge diffuser under the rear of the British cars. The team was consistent all year and however Le Mans was a big win for Ford GT, the world titles for drivers and teams in GTE-Pro both went to Aston Martin.

The AMR no longer uses the normally aspirated V12 or V8 engines from the British brand but a V8 twin-turbo that has been developed by Mercedes AMG. The Aston Martins didn’t have a good year at Le Mans; one car failing to finish and the other only managed 44th.
