1981 Rally San Remo, Audi Quattro. In 1980 Audi introduced the Quattro to the rally world. Based on the Audi 80/90 and equipped with permanent All Wheel Drive, it was a bit too long and heavy at first. It suffered from understeer, especially on tarmac which it compensated with plenty of power from the straight-5 turbo engine. But on gravel and snow, the Quattro had much more grip than its conventional two-wheel drive competitors. Mouton and Pons were the first ladies to win a rally that counted for the World Rally Championship. Audi finished 5th in the manufacturers championship, but would win this in 1982 and 1984. In 1983 the Germans finished second to Martini Lancia and in 1985 and 1986 the championship was won by Peugeot.

Exactly four years later in San Remo 1985, Walter Röhrl scored the last WRC victory with an Audi Quattro. The car has evolved into a fire spitting monster with a much shorter wheelbase, 20-valve engine and massive wings which it needs to keep up with the competition from Lancia, Peugeot and Ford. When Group B rally cars were banned by the end of 1986, Audi prepared their Quattro one more time to conquer Pikes Peak. Michele Mouton already won this famous hill climb in 1985, Bobby Unser did the same in 1986 and now Walter Röhrl set a new record. Different sources claim different engine outputs but probably well over 700 hp.

1988 Trans-Am championship, Audi 200 Quattro. Audi entered the Trans-Am series with a large Audi 200 saloon that made use of the Quattro driveline and turbo-engine developed in rally. Despite getting penalized with additional weight and air restrictors, the Audi’s kept on winning. Hans J. Stuck made his debut in Cleveland, replacing Walter Röhrl, and won! His teammate Hurley Haywood drove the entire season and took the Trans-Am title. Trans-Am quickly changed their regulations; in 1989 only 2WD was allowed and the engine had to be American … sore losers.

Now they entered DTM to compete against BMW and Mercedes on home soil. Not with a lightweight homologation special but their luxury V8 saloon. It was much larger and heavier than the competition, but very competitive because it’s AWD and powerful V8. Hans J. Stuck had the most experience racing Quattro’s and he won the title in the very first season.

2022 Dakar, Audi RS Q e-tron. In 2022 Audi joins the Dakar competition with an exceptional car. The RS Quattro e-tron has two electric motors, but also a TFSI petrol engine from a DTM car that acts as a generator and makes more noise than any other Dakar car. The project will last three years. 2022 was a learning year and Stéphane Peterhansel won one special stage but didn’t finish the rally. Ekström and Sainz both won a stage in 2023, but only Ekström finished the race in 14th place. In 2024 – the last year of the project – good old Carlos Sainz sr. was fast and reliable and took victory.

2017 Nürburgring 24h, Audi R8 LMS (2016). The Nürburgring 24-hour race is the most unpredictable endurance race in the world because of the changing weather conditions. The Land Motorsport had to make a pitstop for a loose fuel cap and as it began to rain, the crew put the car on wet weather tires. The two leading cars were in front (the WRT Audi and ROWE BMW) and these got caught in the rain. When these eventually made their stop, the Land car had taken the lead with only 1 lap to go!
