#048 Chrysler / Dodge Viper

1994 Le Mans 24h, Dodge Viper R/T 10. These are the two first Vipers running at Le Mans. The entries were done by Belgian Luigi Team in the GT1 category. Both cars managed to finish, one even on the podium, the other was not classified as it hadn’t covered enough distance.

1997/ 1998 Japanese GT Championship, Chrysler Viper GTS/R. Dodge Vipers were not only used at Le Mans and in the FIA GT Series, it also found its way to Japan. Team Taisan Advan used a Porsche GT2 in the first part of the 1997 season before they switched to this mighty Viper. Its best result was 8th in the season final at Sugo. For the 1998 season, Tsuchiya was replaced by Tajima which brought no success. Only in the last race of the championship, when Anthony Reid replaced Tajima, the team scored its only point of the season.

1997 Le Mans 24h, Chrysler Viper GTS/R. Two teams ran Vipers with factory support in 1996; French Oreca and Canadian Canasta. In 1997 Team Oreca became the official works team and entered 3 cars at Le Mans. Two crashed and the 3rd only finished 14th. The Vipers did however win the FIA GT2 championship this year, in the following years they would also dominate Le Mans in GT2.

2000 Le Mans 24h, Chrysler Viper GTS-R. The Vipers were red and white this year, just like the new Reynard-Chryler prototypes. The Vipers did better than their sister team. The big snakes finished 1st, 2nd and 5th in the GTS category.

2001 Le Mans 24h, Chrysler Viper GTS-R. Chrysler stopped their factory support and was presented by privateers. However, one of the teams that raced a Viper was Oreca, still with sponsoring from Playstation. Unfortunately the team was one of the first victims of the heavy rain that started in the 4th lap of the race.

2002 Le Mans 24h, Chrysler Viper GTS-R. Just like in 2001, French Motorsport Federation FFSA entered a Playstation sponsored Oreca Viper. The young drivers did doing a good job and finished 3rd in GTS class.

1997 Le Mans 24h, Chrysler Viper GTS-R. The small privateer team from Hugh Chamberlain didn’t stand a chance against the factory team from Team Oreca. But they achieved a nice 6th place in GT2 this year.

1998 Le Mans 24h, Chrysler Viper GTS-R. Chamberlain Engineering did even better than last year; they finished 5th in GT2.

1999 Le Mans 24h, Chrysler Viper GTS-R. In 1999, the Chamberlain entered Chrysler Viper managed to get the third step on the podium behind the two factory Vipers. What a great effort for the privateers.

1999 Le Mans 24h, Chrysler Viper GTS-R. The Vipers dominate the GT2 / GTS class. This is one of two Belmondo cars. Vipers finished 1st until 6th in class, with this one in fifth spot.

2000 Le Mans 24h, Chrysler Viper GTS-R. This ex-Oreca Viper is ran by Dutch Carsport Holland, an initiative from Team Hezemans. They normally compete in the European FIA GT Championship. In Le Mans they were the best privateer in the GTS class behind the factory Vipers and Corvettes.

2001 Spa-Francorchamps 24h, Chrysler Viper GTS/R. French Larbre Racing has been very successful with GT Porsches and afterwards these Vipers. The 24 hour race at Spa-Francorchamps, part of the FIA GT Championship was won with a double victory for the French team. This car qualified 11th and won, its teammates started back in 30th place and finished 2nd, 5 laps behind.

2002 Spa-Francorchamps 24h, Chrysler Viper GTS/R. The same car also won the 2002 edition of the Spa 24-hour race.

2002 Le Mans 24h, Chrysler Viper GTS/R. Team Carsport Holland returned to Le Mans this year after their fine race in 2000. They had to abandon the race with a damaged car but were never in the position to threaten the mighty Corvettes.

2004 FIA GT Monza, Chrysler Viper GTS/R. Dutch team Zwaan Racing entered two Vipers in the FIA GT Championship. However the car is over its top, they reached a 6th place in de first race of the season thanks to a surprisingly strong driver line up.

2002 Nürburgring 24h, Zakspeed Dodge Viper GTS/R. The 24 hour race at the Nürburgring is very special and quite different from Daytona or Le Mans. More than 180 teams (professional and amateurs drive the 15 mile track through the forest). Zakspeed won this event in 1999 and 2001 and even with a restrictor it took victory in 2002.

2003 Spa-Francorchamps 24h, Zakspeed Chrysler Viper GTS/R. The Zakspeed Viper GTS-R dominated the 24h race at Nürburgring for years; it won in 1999, 2001 and 2002. In 2003 it also participated in the FIA GT race at Francorchamps in the G3 category. It showed its reliability again by finishing 5th.

2005 Nürburgring 24h, Zakspeed Dodge Viper GTS/R. The 24 hour race at the Nürburgring is very special. Zakspeed won this event in 1999, 2001 and 2002, this year they finish 3rd behind the works BMW’s, despite being handicapped with extra weight and engine restrictions.

2013 Le Mans 24h, SRT Viper GTS/R. The impressive Chrysler / Dodge Vipers dominated GT racing end of the last century. Even after the works support stopped, the mighty V10’s remained succesful in the hands of privateers for some years. Now Chrysler tries again with the new Viper. SRT Motorsport enters 2 cars that are developed by Riley in the American Le Mans Series and at Le Mans. Both cars make it to the finish but way back.

2014 United SportsCar Championship, SRT Viper GTS/R. SRT Motorsport enters 2 cars that are developed by Riley in the United SportsCar Championship. They skip Le Mans to cencentrate entirly on th US title. The #93 Viper only wins two races but is very consistent. SRT Motorsports takes the team championship and Kumo Wittmer wins the drivers title.

2015 Le Mans 24h, SRT Viper GTS/R. Ben Keating, owner of dealer Viper Exchange, manages to get one of the Riley prepared factory cars and brings it to Le Mans. They do well but have to retire with a broken gearbox not long before the end of the race.
