The Gordon Murray designed F1 GTR was the first road going car that McLaren built. It was immediately popular for racing in the BPR-series which would become the official FIA-GT Championship. This attracted many more car manufacturers that built homologation specials that were faster than the original F1 GTR. The long tail version of the McLaren was an improvement but not enough.

1995 a spectacular debut
1995 BPR-series 4h Nürburgring, McLaren F1 GTR. The GRT Jacadi McLaren wasn’t as fast as the GTC and David Price cars all season, but nevertheless finished second at the Nürburgring round of the BPR Series.

1995 BPR Series Suzuka 1000 km, McLaren F1 GTR. Thomas Bscher brought the first McLaren to the BPR series. He competed together with his teammate Nielsen in the red and white of West. At Monza and Suzuka they drove in this black Davidoff livery which brought them luck: 1st at Monza, 2nd at Suzuka.

1996 BPR Series Spa-Francorchamps 4h, McLaren F1 GTR. Thomas Bscher and John Nielsen took the BPR title in 1995, so they were allowed to use #1 this year. At Spa-Francorchamps, the car had West livery on it. In many other events the tobacco advertising was replaced by an unreadable version of West or by East. The 1996 title went to the GTC/Gulf Mclaren of Ray Bellm and James Weaver.

1996 Le Mans 24h, McLaren F1 GTR. At Le Mans 1996 David Price Racing team was reinforced with Dutchman Peter Kox, they finished 4th despite a small off. The usual sponsor West (and its alternative East) weren’t allowed, so the team had support from Art Sports, 0123 and TAG Heuer.

Not only customer teams used the McLaren F1 GTR, BMW Motorsport also entered two cars which were prepared by partner Bigazzi Racing. No less than 6 McLarens finished inside the top 10, but they just couldn’t match the speed of the Porsche GT1 and WSC Prototypes.

1998 Le Mans 24h, McLaren F1 GTR Longtail. These two GTC entered cars were the only Macs starting at Le Mans in 1998. These weren’t very fast compared to the new generation GT1 prototypes, but still very very reliable. #40 was in the pits only for fuel and tires and finished a very impressive 4th overall. Despite having two future winners on board – Capello and Pirro – #41 crashed Sunday morning

1998 Le Mans 24h, McLaren F1 GTR Longtail. The McLaren was over its top in 1998. FIA GT1 was dominated by Mercedes and also the 1998 version of the Porsche GT1 was much too fast for the McLaren. Privateer Dr. Tomas Bscher was one of the few to drive a Mac, he contested the entire FIA Championship. Most events his sponsor Davidoff wasn’t allowed at the car, so he used “Day off”. In Japan he could advertise for Davidoff but it brought no luck, they retired after an accident. Dr. Bscher was partnered by Geoff Lees this race, who was a regular on the Japanese racetracks.

1999 Fuji 1000 km, McLaren F1 GTR. After the GT1 class disappeared, most McLarens all went to musea, but some remained active such as this one that was bought by Japanese Mitotsuyama Racing. The used it in the 1999 Fuji 1000km race. A non-championship event that was won by the Nissan R391 in front of the famous Toyota GT-One. The following years the Mac would compete in the Japanese GT500 Championship.
