Mercedes quit all motorsports activities after the terrible accident at Le Mans in 1995. In the 1970’s AMG returned to the tracks with the impressive Red Pig. It took some more years until the official return of the Mercedes factory but since then, the Germans are active in Formula 1, GT1, GT3, DTM and Formula-E. Many factory cars raced in the silver, these can be found in #055 Silver Arrows.
The big ones from AMG
1971 Spa-Francorchamps 24h, Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL 6,8. Auftrecht and Melger (AMG) took the Mercedes 300 SEL 6.3 and enlarged the engine to 6.8 liters, delivering 420 bhp. The flashing red car was much bigger and heavier than the cars it competed against, it got the nickname “Rote Sau”, meaning Red Pig. Heyer and Schickentanz competed the 24 hours race at Spa-Francorchamps 1971 and surprisingly finished 2nd behind the sole remaining factory Ford Capri RS 2600. Unfortunately the original car has been scrapped, but in 2006 AMG built a replica that is now used for shows and demonstration runs.

1978 Le Mans 24h, Mercedes-Benz 450 SLC 5.0. AMG entered this impressive silver Mercedes 450 SLC in the European Touring Car Championship in 1978 (picture left). The car had more power than the BMW’s but was a bit heavier and it had a 3 speed automatic gearbox as the 5 speed manual wasn’t homologated. So it never beat BMW in that year. AMG also tried to compete at Le Mans where the car was entered in group 5 with a five-speed gearbox. But it was no match for the Porsche 935 and didn’t even qualify for the race.

1989 Spa-Francorchamps 24h, Mercedes-Benz 500 SEC. The battle in the great touringcar races went on between the powerful Ford Sierra Cosworths and the BMW M3 with its excellent handling and reliability. Mercedes tuner AMG entered two outsiders for the Francorchamps 24 hour race in 1989. The luxury coupes with their automatic transmission were no match for the homologation specials from Ford and BMW and had to retire early in the race.

DTM Mercedes C-class
1994 DTM Championship, Mercedes C-class DTM. 1993 Was the first year of DTM following the FIA class 1 regulations. Alfa Romeo and Opel arrived with brand new cars that had high revving V6 engines and all-wheel drive. Mercedes still used improved versions of the 4-cylinder 190E 2.6-16 evo2 and lost out to Nicola Larini in his Alfa Romeo. In 1994, 6 drivers received the new C-class DTM car with a V6-engine that delivered well over 400 hp. That car still had only rear-wheel drive but that made it lighter than the AWD competition. Bernd Schneider took his first of 5 DTM titles.

The rear-wheel drive Mercedes were competitive; Schneider was the best with 4 victories this season, but the rest didn’t score that well and Mercedes ended last in the makes ranking.
