Riley & Scott Mk III
Bob Riley is a racing car constructor that has developed many cars over the years. He worked on the Coyote and Wildcat Indycars, the Greenwood Corvette in the 1970’s and the front-engined Mustang GTP in the 1980’s. Another one of his designs was the 1991 Intrepid GTP car that he designed with his son Bill and was built by Pratt and Miller. A few laters later he partnered with Mark Scott and they built the Riley & Scott Mk III which was a successful World Sports Car that made use of different engines and was loved for its simplicity and easy handling.
1996 Daytona 24h, Riley & Scott Mk III – Oldsmobile. This Oldsmobile powered R&S from Doyle Racing car won the Daytona 24 hour race in 1996. It beat the Momo Ferrari 333 SP and Kudzu-Mazda, another R&S finished 5th. A month later, the same car won the Sebring 12h race. The championship was a big battle between the Doyle and Dyson Riley & Scotts and the Momo Ferrari. South African Wayne Taylor won the IMSA drivers title.

Cadillac
Cadillac wanted to compete at Le Mans with a car that was powered by their new V8 engine. Instead of developing a car themselves, Cadillac hired the expertise from Bob Riley and his son Bill to convert the Riley & Scott Mk III into a Cadillac Northstar LMP. The car was much slower and less reliable than the also new Audi R8.
2000 Le Mans 24h, Cadillac Northstar LMP. Cadillac entered no less than 4 cars for their first Le Mans. Two silver colored cars were operated by Riley Motorsport, two black cars by the French DAMS team. It was a disaster; the #3 car finished only 19th – 68 laps behind the winning Audi – and was best of the Cadillacs. The Riley cars finished 21st and 22nd while the second DAMS retired.
#3 Emmanuel Collard (F) / Eric Bernard (F) / Franck Montagny (F) – 19th

2001 Le Mans 24h, Cadillac Northstar LMP01. Cadillac returned to Le Mans in 2001 with two aerodynamically improved cars from 2000, especially on the position of the radiators and a somewhat longer, more aerodynamic tail. This year the Caddy’s used Michelin tires. DAMS were again running the Northstars but these were too slow, not only compared to the Audi’s. The #5 car had to retire after it crashed.
#6 Wayne Taylor (SA) / Max Angelelli (I) / Christophe Tinseau (F) – 15th
DAMS Cadillac Northstar LMP01 – 4.0 liter Cadillac Northstar V8 twin turbo, approximately. 580 hp. Michelin tires. Weight 915 kg. Carbon fiber and aluminum honeycomb monocoque, chassisnr. R&S LMP-00-004

2002 Le Mans 24h, Cadillac Northstar LMP02. Not really a Riley anymore! The 2002 car was completely new designed by Nigel Stroud, who already worked on the aerodynamics of the 2001 cars. New Garrett turbo chargers were fitted and the gearbox was now operated pneumatically. The carbon fibre monocoque was produced in England. Cadillac announced mid-season that the project would be stopped by the end of 2002, after that some small successes were achieved in the American Le Mans Series.

Riley & Scott Mk IIIC
Once the Northstar LMPs for the 2001 season were completed, Riley & Scott turned their attention back to their Mk III. Riley & Scott chose to start from scratch and develop an all-new car which continued the Mk III’s simple lay-out, but received some of the advancements that Riley & Scott had used on the Northstar LMP.
2002 Le Mans 24h, Riley & Scott Mk IIIC – Ford. The old Riley & Scott Mk III has a great track record. The new Mk IIIC has the same lay-out as the original Mk III but with a much lower body line. Unlike the Cadillacs, the radiator is again placed in the front as it was in the Mk III. This car retired after 194 laps with a broken V8.
#4 Jim Matthews (USA) / Marc Goossens (B) / Didier Theys (B) – DNF
Riley & Scott Mk IIIC – 6.0 liter Ford Elan V8, approximately. 600 hp. Goodyear tires. Weight 920 kg. Steel space frame with composite panels, chassisnr. R&S #01-004

2003 Le Mans 24h, Riley & Scott Mk IIIC – Ford. The Riley & Scott Mk IIIC was a relative simple car, but powered by a big V8 it was quite quick. This year, the car qualified on the 4th row, but again retired with a broken V8.

Riley Daytona Prototypes
Since 2000, two sports car series existed in the USA; the American Le Mans Series and the Grand-Am Series which was the successor of the USSRC. In 2003, Grand-Am introduced an entire new sports car series that was a low-cost alternative for the Le Mans Prototypes and named it Daytona Prototypes. Standardized components, road legal based engines and a restricted number of chassis suppliers were key elements. One of those chassis suppliers was Riley Technologies.
2005 Daytona 24h, Riley Mk XI – Pontiac. The 2005 Daytona winner was this Riley from SunTrust Racing using a V8 Pontiac engine. All three drivers are from outside North America, but have lots of experience in American racing series. Wayne Taylor already had won Daytona before in a Riley & Scot Mk III.
#10 Wayne Taylor (SA) / Max Angelelli (I) / Emmanuel Collard (F) – 1st

2009 Daytona 24h, Riley Mk XI – Porsche. Daytona Prototypes exist since 2003. Great equality in chassis, restricted engines and no exotic materials are the keywords. In the beginning there was some criticism because of the strange looking cars but that has disappeared. The class offers full grids of bright coloured cars and great motorsport. The 2009 Daytona winner was this Brumos Riley with a Porsche engine.

2011 Daytona 24h, Riley-Porsche MkXX. The 2010 Daytona winner was this Riley from Action Express Racing that developed the V8 engine from the Porsche Cayenne for racing. 2011 Daytona 24h, Riley-Porsche MkXI. Jörg Bergmeister, factory driver for Porsche, put this Flying Lizard Riley-Porsche on pole position for this year’s Daytona 24h race. Riley Technologies / Riley Motorsports
Riley Technologies developed prototypes as well as GT-cars.
They also provided the technical support on the racetrack as Riley Motorsports.
2010 Daytona 24h, Mazda RX8. While the rotary engines have been banned from sports car racing and Mazda switched to ‘normal’ petrol engines, Mazda still raced ‘rotary chain saws’ in GT. In the Grand Am Series most attention goes to the Daytona Prototypes which are the fastest. But behind that, great GT racing is going on. The GT class is surprisingly not dominated by the traditional GT makes, but by the Riley designed Mazda. This RX-8 won the GT class at Daytona in front of some 911 GT3 cup, Camaro, BMW M6 and more Mazda’s.
