The new group 5 regulations were a perfect fit for Porsche. The basis is quite simple; take a homologated street car and tune the engine as you wish as long as it stays in the original position in the car. Fenders may be widened to cover the large tires, spoilers may be added, only the rear spoiler may not be wider dan the cockpit. Windows and doors need to have the original shape. Porsche’s 911 turbo was the perfect car for this series and the Germans already had a lot of experience with the RSR turbo and 934.
1976 Test Weissach, Porsche 935 prototype. The new group 5 regulations were a perfect match for Porsche. The Germans developed the 935 out of the 911 turbo (930) streetcar. This is the first test version, still with the Porsche 911 style head lights and a large low rear spoiler that came straight from the 1974 RSR Turbo.

1977: double turbos and a baby …
1977 Le Mans 24h, Porsche 935/77. The factory version of the 1977 Porsche 935 had some new aerodynamic features such as a slimmer nose and higher rear spoiler. The engine was equipped with two smaller turbo’s while the 1976 version had a large single one. The new engine was a bit more powerful and had better throttle response than the 1976 version, but it seized and the car had to retire early in the race.

1978 Test Paul Ricard, Porsche 935/78 “Moby Dick”. One of the most impressive Le Mans cars is undoubtedly this Porsche 935 “Moby Dick”. It has an aluminum space frame and the 3.2-liter twin-turbo engine with water cooled cylinder heads delivers over 800 bhp. Before it was sent into battle, the car was tested extensively with somewhat different aerodynamics by Jacky Ickx at Paul Ricard.

40 Years later
2018, Porsche GT2 RS “935”. This Club sport racer, as Porsche puts it, will surely turn heads at any race track it shows up. Although the chassis, engine and transmission are from Porsche’s ludicrous street-legal Porsche GT2 RS, the 935 is not something you can’t drive down the road. That’s because everything that makes is strikingly dramatic isn’t there just to excite old-school fans who remember the original from 40 years ago; it’s all about functioning aerodynamic features that help you go faster on a closed course.
