In 1970 the Porsche supported works teams were the Gulf sponsored JWA team, Porsche Salzburg that took Porsche’s first Le Mans victory and Hans-Dieter Dechent’s Martini Racing International. The Martini cars had some wild liveries in 1970. The well known silver and white with the blue and red striping appeared in 1971.
Hippie liveries in 1970
1970 Le Mans 24h, Porsche 917L. Martini Racing International was one of the two teams that entered a long tail Porsche 917 for Le Mans. The car was white, designer Anatole Lapine painted the purple swirls on it just in time for qualifying, before the race the bright green was added. The exceptional high topspeed of 380 km/h couldn’t be used in the pouring rain.

1970 Le Mans 24h, Porsche 908/02 LH. This long tail version of the Porsche 908/02 “founder” may not have been in hippie style but it was very competitive. The Martini car with its Austrian drivers finished 3rd overall and won the 3-liter prototype categorie.

1970 Watkins Glen 6h, Porsche 917K. The hippie 917 also competed in Watkins Glen where it finished 9th. Remarkable is that the Le Mans car ran on Goodyear tires while this one – in the same season – is fitted with Firestones. Martini Racing competed in many races this year with the #021 chassis, most of these in the Interseries with Gijs van Lennep as driver.

1971 Buenos Aires 1000km, Porsche 917K. The Temporada, Buenos Aires’ 1000 km race was the first race of the1971 championship. Battle went on between the Gulf Porsches and the 3-liter Alfa Romeos. The Martini Porsches used the now famous silver and stripe colors for the first time but did not score. The #36 car from Van Lennep and Marko retired with a broken engine after only two laps. The team expected it would probably happen before the race started, so expectations were not that high. #38 lead the race for a while but was disqualified because of unauthorized assistance outside the pit lane.

1971 Nürburgring 1000km, Porsche 908/03. The 908/03 was a special short version used by the Porsche factory teams on tracks where handling was more important than power such as Targa Florio or Nürburgring. Ferrari had pole but retired and the Alfa’s were just not quick enough this time. Porsches finished 1-2-3. The #4 car was white during qualifying, it raced in the silver Martini livery.

1971 Le Mans 24h, Porsche 917K. The Porsche 917’s were this year’s favourites for the Le Mans victory. But it weren’t the very fast longtails that won. This new 917K with a magnesium chassis came first and set a distance record that existed until 2010.

The #21 was a 917L (for long tail) which were somewhat different from last years car; the front end looked a bit like that from the 917/20 “pig”. Three of these cars entered the race (1 Martini, 2 Gulf) but all failed to finish. This one suffered a broken cooling fan and overheating problems.

1971 Le Mans 24h, Porsche 917/20. Count Rossi refused to paint it in the Martini livery or even put its name on it. Someone called the car a pig and Porsche designer Anatole Lapine’s idea for the new livery was born. The Porsche 917/20 was not as successful as hoped for, but its chassis would be the basis for the all conquering CanAm 917 turbos.
