#072 Porsche 908 & 936 clients

While Porsche developed the 936 as prototype for the 3-liter category, Reinhold Joest used Porsche 908 tube frames to build similar cars. The history of these cars run parallel with that of the Porsche 936.

1975 Le Mans 24h, Porsche 908/03 LH. The 1975 Le Mans was a non-championship race because ACO introduced a fuel consumption limit, so Joest decided to use his 908 chassis #012 that still had the old normally aspirated flat-8 instead of car #008 with 6-cylinder turbo he used during the world championship races. Because of the character of the Le Mans track, Joest chose the longtail bodywork without the rear spoiler. It was a good decision; the team reached a fine 4th place behind the Gulf Mirages and a Ligier, all with Cosworth engines.

1976 Nürburgring 300km, Porsche 908/03 turbo. Reinhold Joest used Porsches 908/03 with the turbo engine from the RSR already in 1974. This 1976 Joest car was quite similar to the brand new factory entered Porsche 936, and it won the 300 km race ahead of that same factory car.

1976 Le Mans 24h, Porsche 908 LH. Reinhold Joest was successful with his 908/03 with long tail bodywork and turbo engine. But just as in 1975, he entered a normally aspirated car 8-cylinder car for Le Mans. Reinhold didn’t drive it himself, he piloted one of the two factory 936s. This long tail 908 didn’t have a rear spoiler but just a gurney flap to decrease drag which is important on the long Mulsanne straight.

1976 Le Mans 24h, Porsche 908/03 turbo. Reinhold Joest wasn’t the only one to race turbo-versions of the old Porsche 908. Less well known is the German entrepreneur Egon Evertz who also ran a turbo engined 908/03 at Le Mans in 1976. The Evertz car looked more like a 917/10 with its short tail and rear spoiler that was different from the Joest car and works 936’s. His co-pilot was the very quick Finnish driver Leo Kinnunen, the team retired with a broken engine.

1980 Nürburgring 1000km, Porsche 908/03 turbo. Even a few years later, the good old Porsche 908/03 turbo was still competitive on certain tracks. Like this Joest car that was rebuild to the short tail bodywork and won a world championship race at the Nürburgring. Fact is that the competition wasn’t very strong and consisted mostly of group 4 and group 5 GTs.

It was rebuilt with original parts by Sigi Brunn, he replaced the 8-cylinder engine by a 2.1-liter turbo and raced in endurance races and the DRM championship. Later it was purchased by fortuned amateur racer Jean-Marc Luco who painted it in Martini colors and raced it in historic events.

1980 Le Mans 24h, Porsche 908/80. This year the Porsche works team entered three 924 GTPs and no 936 … officially. Joest was allowed to build a entirely new 936 according to 1977 specs that received chassisnr. #004. But Porsche didn’t want the 936 name used for this car that was entered by Joest Racing, so the car competed as 908/80. Martini was back as sponsor and also the #1 works driver Jacky Ickx. They finished second, 2 laps behind local hero Jean Rondeau in his Rondeau – Cosworth.

The race was stopped after only 17 laps because of the deadly accident from Swiss driver Herbert Müller, driving an older 908/03 turbo, who crashed into a stranded car …

1982 Le Mans 24h, JOEST Porsche 936C. In 1982 Porsche introduced their new Group C Porsche 956, a true winner that took a triple victory in Le Mans. But the car is not yet available for the customer teams, so Joest built their own Group C car based on the tube frame 936 but with a 20 cm longer wheelbase and closed body work. It is best of the rest behind the factory 956s, but had to retire.

1982 DRM Hockenheim, Porsche 936/82. For the 1982 season, Kremer build a completely new 936 based on the original design using factory spare parts. It had the rear wing of the 936/81 and a large diffuser, but still used the old air-cooled 2.1 liter engine. It was recognized by Porsche as a true 936 and received chassisnr. #005. Stommelen used the car with #8 in the DRM championship until he switched to the CK5 during the season. The last races of the season, the car was raced by Stefan Bellof using #23.
