The BMW M1 was the first super car made by the German manufacturer. The intention was that 400 cars needed for homologation would be built at the Lamborghini factory. The entire process was delayed after Lamborghini struck financial troubles. In the end 453 cars were built; 399 for the road and 54 Procars.

A racing series in which regular top drivers competed against formula 1 stars that were offered a factory car. Niki Lauda was the first champion in 1979. (pic Reutemann & Needell). 1979 Le Mans 24h, BMW M1. For the fourth time in five years, Hervé Poulian entered a BMW Art Car at Le Mans. After Calder, Stella and Lichtenstein the series reached its high with this BMW M1 hand painted by Andy Warhol.

1980 Procar Championship, BMW M1. Nelson Piquet drove one of the guest cars on many occasions and won the last three races of the season to become the 1980 champion. Stuck took over the GS car after Hans-Georg Bürger sadly died in an accident in Formula 2.

1980 Procar Championship, BMW M1. Also competing in the championship was Jan Lammers in a car entered by the Dutch BMW distributor, in which Toine Hezemans drove last year. Jan won the season opener at Donington and took second twice. He looked to be a contender, but the second half of the season the speed was gone and he finished 4th in the championship.

1980 Le Mans 24h, BMW M1 wide body. The BMW M1 is famous from the Procar Championship. The M1 was also converted to Group 5 and IMSA GTX specs by several chassis builders such as March, Sauber and Martini, but was still using the normally aspirated engine of the procar, it was no match for the more powerful Porsches 935. This March built M1 was slower than the normal M1’s and retired after a crash.

1981 Le Mans 24h, BMW M1 wide body. The M1 was also converted to Group 5 specs by several chassis builders, but still using the normally aspirated engine of the Procar, it was no match for the more powerful Porsches 935. Reliability was not the strongest point, all but one M1’s retired with problems, this one after it was damaged. It was the only M1 that was entered in IMSA GTX, all other were Group 5. But the specs are similar, the difference in qualifying was only 0.2 seconds.

1982 DRM Norisring, BMW M1. The DRM was the main event in these years where group 5 GT’s and sports cars battled against each other. In the shadow of this, group B and group 4 cars competed in the Rennsport Trophae. In the over 2-litre category many ex-Procar BMW M1 were present. One of them was this Jägermeister sponsored car of Kurt König.
