1974 Tour de France, Lancia Stratos HF. In the Tour de France teams crossed France in a few days time and had to compete in rally stages and races on famous tracks such as Rouen, Pau, Reims, Clermont-Ferrand and Le Mans. The battle in 1974 went on between the Ligier-Maserati en the Lancia’s sponsored by Marlboro. The event, which was part of the European GT Championship was won by Gérard Larrousse in the Ligier. Andruet finished third for Lancia.

1976 Rally Monte Carlo, Lancia Stratos HF. The Lancia Stratos was the perfect rally car in the 1970’s; light weight, short wheelbase for excellent handling and a powerful V6 Ferrari Dino engine. In the 44th Rally de Monte Carlo, the Italian cars finished 1-2-3.

1977 Giro d’Italia, Lancia Stratos turbo. The Lancia Stratos was the perfect rally car, but for racing it wasn’t ideal. The short wheel base and 2.4 liter engine were a bit of a disadvantage compared to the very powerful 3.5 liter BMW or turbo Porsches. Even after Lancia developed a group 5 turbo version of the Stratos, but that was only successful in the Giro d’ Italia, the Italian counter part of the Tour de France Automobile.

1979 Giro d’Italia, Lancia Beta Montecarlo turbo.The Giro d’Italia is famous combination of race and rallye which was very popular in the 70’s. Lancia won it with the Stratos and competed in ’79 with the new Beta turbo. Villeneuve and Röhrl were disqualified because they used the motorway in a section were that wasn’t permitted. In 1980 the Lancia’s (in Martini outfit) would take revenge and finish 1st and 2nd.

1979 Silverstone 6h, Lancia Beta Montecarlo turbo. In a collaboration with Dallara, Abarth, and Pininfarina, the Italian manufacturer produced the Group 5 specification Beta Montecarlo Turbo. It made its debut in 1979 in the world Championship at Silverstone where it blew a head gasket in lap 4.

1979 Pergusa 6h, Lancia Beta Montecarlo turbo. A month later, the Lancia had also failed to finish the Nürburgring race (#23), it now competed in the 6-hour race at Enna-Pergusa on Sicily. However it was a World Championship race, the line-up was very poor. But the little Lancia managed to complete the entire 6 hours and finished second overall, winning group 5.

1980 Monza 6h, Lancia Beta Montecarlo turbo. In 1980, the Little Lancia’s now were reliable and took quite many class wins in the World Championship. In Monza they were 3rd and 5th overall. The picture is from the #2 car that finished 5th.

1980 Le Mans 24h, Lancia Beta Montecarlo turbo. At Le Mans, both factory cars retired with oil pressure problems, only the Jolly Club car managed to complete the 24-hours. It finished 19th overall but did win the group 5 under 2-liter category.

1980 Daytona 24h, Lancia Beta Montecarlo turbo. Chassis #1001, the first Montecarlo turbo, was handed over to Jolly Club. It performed very well at the fast track of Daytona, finishing 10th overall and 1st GTX < 2 liter.

1980 DRM Zolder, Lancia Beta Montecarlo turbo. Shortly after Daytona, chassis 1001 was transported to Germany where Gerhard Schneider‘s GS Tuning would use it for Hans Heyer. The first race of the season was in Zolder in Belgium. GS didn’t have time to spray the car in the blue of sponsor Fruit of the Loom, so it ran in white, just as it did in Daytona. Heyer took pole-position for the Division II race and finished second, behind the turbo Capri of Klaus Niedzwiedz.

1980 DRM Championship, Lancia Beta Montecarlo turbo. Hans Heyer (who developed the Capri turbo at Zakspeed) drove a Lancia in the 1980 DRM season. He won only 2 races but was so consistent that he won the championship. Heyer had a terrifying crash at the Norisring but escaped unhurt.

1981 Nürburgring 1000km, Lancia Beta Montecarlo turbo. In 1981, Hans Heyer again drove the Lancia in Division II now as reigning champion wearing #1. A second car, with #8 was entered for Sigi Müller jr. with co-sponsorship from Arcus Air. During the 1000 km race at the Nürburgring, a race for the World Championship, that car (#17) was driven by Hans Heyer and Piercarlo Ghinzani to 4th place overall. In the picture it’s hiding behind the works Lancia in Martini livery.
