The Lancia Stratos was the perfect rally car in the 1970’s; light weight, short wheelbase for excellent handling and a powerful V6 Ferrari Dino engine. In the 44th Rally de Monte Carlo, the Italian cars finished 1-2-3.

1979 Giro d’Italia, Lancia Beta Montecarlo turbo
The Giro d’Italia is famous combination of race and rallye which was very popular in the 70’s. Lancia won it with the Stratos and competed in ’79 with the new Beta turbo. Villeneuve and Röhrl were disqualified because they used the motorway in a section were that wasn’t permitted. In 1980 the Lancia’s (in Martini outfit) would take revenge and finish 1st and 2nd.

1979 Pergusa 6h, Lancia Beta Montecarlo turbo
A month later, the Lancia had also failed to finish the Nürburgring race (#23), it now competed in the 6-hour race at Enna-Pergusa on Sicily. However it was a World Championship race, the line-up was very poor. But the little Lancia managed to complete the entire 6 hours and finished second overall, 5 laps behind a 2-liter Osella sportscar but winning group 5.

1980 Monza 1000km, Lancia Beta Montecarlo turbo
In 1980, the Little Lancia’s now were reliable and took quite many class wins in the World Championship. In Monza they finished 3rd and 5th overall, taking a double victory in the below 2-liter category.

1980 Le Mans 24h, Lancia Beta Montecarlo turbo
At Le Mans, both factory cars retired with oil pump problems, the first one after only 6 laps, this managed to complete 26. Only the Jolly Club car managed to complete the 24-hours and won the group 5 under 2-liter category.

Chassis #1001, the first Montecarlo turbo, was handed over to Jolly Club. It performed very well at the fast track of Daytona, finishing 10th overall and 1st in their category.

1980 DRM Zolder, Lancia Beta Montecarlo turbo
Shortly after the Daytona 24h, chassis 1001 was transported to Germany where Gerhard Schneider‘s GS Tuning would use it for Hans Heyer. The first race of the season was in Zolder in Belgium. GS didn’t have time to spray the car in the blue of sponsor Fruit of the Loom, so it ran in white, just as it did in Daytona. Heyer took pole-position for the Division II race and finished second, less than 2 seconds behind the turbo Capri of Klaus Niedzwiedz.

1980 DRM Championship, Lancia Beta Montecarlo turbo
Hans Heyer (who developed the Capri turbo at Zakspeed) drove a Lancia in the 1980 DRM season. He won only 2 races but was so consistent that he won the championship. Heyer had a horrific crash at the Norisring but escaped unhurt.

Jolly Club cooperates close to the Lancia works team and often receives the former factory cars, both rally and race. In 1984 Jolly Club operates the Lancia LC2 at Le Mans but retire with a blown head gasket.

1982 Homologation, Lancia 037 Stradale
To homologate the car for Group B, Lancia built 200 road-going versions called the 037 Stradale, which debuted at the 1982 Turin Motor Show.  The car was developed in collaboration between Pininfarina, Abarth and Dallara. The body looks like the Beta Montecarlo, but it’s a completely differ car underneath. It has steel subframes and kevlar body panels. The mid-engined layout of the Montecarlo was retained, but the engine was turned from a transverse to a longitudinal position to give greater freedom in the design of the rear suspension.

1983 European Rally Championship Deutschland Rally, Lancia 037
The year before he would drive the Audi Quattro, Walter Röhrl competed for their biggest rival: Lancia. Röhrl drove the world championship rallies in the works Martini car, some European championship rallies such as the Deutschland rally were contested in a car in the livery of German sponsor Würth.

1985 World Rally Championship Rally Portugal, Lancia 037
Drivers feared the Rally of Portugal because of the immense crowds that stand on the middle of the roads. A crash in 1986 that injured more than 30 and killed 5 people marked the end of the Group B era. A year before, the 1985 rally was won by Timo Salonen in a Peugeot 205 turbo 16. Miki Biasion finished second in his Jolly Club entered two-wheel drive Lancia 037, behind him were three 4WD Audi Quattros. Great performance of the little Lancia in the Portuguese dirt roads.

1986 European Rally Championship Haspengouwe rally, Lancia 037
Patrick Snijers was favourite in the Haspengouwe rally in his works supported Lancia 037. Unfortunately, he had to retire because of a broken head gasket at special stage 8. The victory went to Robert Droogmans in a similar car.
