The Nissan Skyline is famous for its result on the race tracks and very popular in the tuning scene. The Japanese brand also raced with turbo-charged Bluebirds and the Z/ZX series.
The GT1 and LMP prototypes will be shown in another blog later this year.
Silhouette Series
1982 Japanese Silhouette Saloon Championship, Nissan Bluebird turbo. In Europe we had group 5, IMSA GTX in the USA and in Japan they raced Super Silhouettes which are comparable with the group 5 cars. This is one of the powerful Nissans which looks like a Nissan Bluebird but is built around a space frame.

1984 Japanese Silhouette Saloon Championship, Nissan Bluebird turbo. Central 20 didn’t only race the turbo Bluebirds but also the LM03 Nissan prototypes. Yanagida took the title in 1983 and 1984 which was the last year of the Silhouette Series.

1983 Fuji 1000 km, Nissan Skyline Turbo C. When Super Silhouette seized, this fire-spitting Skyline KDR30 was turned into a group C racer by LM and competed in the world championship race at Fuji. You can register as a Group C car, but it stood no chance against the Porsche 956 group C cars and was 9 seconds a lap slower in qualifying. The car retired with a fuel leak.

Skyline R30 & R31
1987 Japanese Touring Car Championship, Nissan Skyline. The Japanese GT Championship (JGTC) is very well known. But that was launched in 1993, in the years before the Japanese Touring Car Championship showed some great racing. This Nissan Skyline RS DR30 made use of a 4-cylinder turbo engine and rear wheel drive.

1987 Japanese Touring Car Championship Fuji, Nissan Skyline. The Nissan GTS-R H31 made its debut in 1987. The championship was dominated by European cars at that time (Sierra Cosworth in division 3 and BMW M3 in division 2). The Ricoh car finished 15th at Fuji, 9th in division 3.

1988 Spa-Francorchamps 24h, Nissan Skyline. The angular Nissan Skyline GTS-R HR31 was a success in Japan thanks to its powerful 6-cylinder turbo engine. Outside Japan it already raced competitive in Australia and Nissan brought the Aussies from down under to the European Touring Car Championship. The Nissan Motor Europe prepared car couldn’t match the speed of the Sierra’s nor the handling and reliability of the BMW’s. It managed to score points only on two occasions, at the Nürburgring and surprisingly at the 24 hour race of Spa-Francorchamps where it finished sixth.

The Japanese Touring Car Championship in 1988 was surprisingly dominated by European cars, the mighty Ford Sierra Cosworth won 4 races and the BMW M3 took some podiums also. Anders Olofsson won twice in a Skyline. Impul Racing entered a similar car for the last race at Fuji but that had to retire.

Skyline R32
1991 Japanese Touring Car Championship, Nissan Skyline. In 1991 the new R32 Nissan Skylines with their all wheel drive and larger turbo-engine dominated the series. The most famous Skyline is undoubtedly the blue Impul Calsonic. Hoshino and Suzuki won 5 out off 6 races and the title.

1991 Spa-Francorchamps 24h, Nissan Skyline. In 1991 and 1992 the Nissan Skylines dominated Japanese Group A. The Zexel car came over to Europe to compete in the Spa 24h race, a non championship event but the home ground of some very fast local teams with well prepared BMW M3 evo’s. The Nissan took the lead at the start and kept it all the way to the finish. The BMW’s broke down and the Nissan finished almost 20 laps (!) in front of some cup Porsches. 6th overall and 1st in group N came another Zexel Nissan.

The Skylines from Spa-Francorchamps 1988 and 1991
1993 Japanese Touring Car Championship Fuji, Nissan Skyline. When the Nissan Skyline R32 entered the Japanese Touring Car Championship, a period of absolute dominance began. The R32 won every race between March 1990 and October 1993. The last one was the Fuji 500 km which was won by Tom Kristensen. From 1994 the JTCC was contested by 2-liter super touring cars, the Skylines switched to JGTC.

1993 Japanese GT Championship, Nissan Skyline. The Japanese GT Championship (JGTC) started in 1993 in a modest way, with only 4 races of which the first one was combined with IMSA cars. Besides the few IMSA cars, there weren’t that many eligible GT’s in Japan. Some Skylines with massive rear wings, Nissan 240SX, and quite some RX-7 participated. Masahiko Kageyama won 3 races with his factory Nissan Skyline R32 in Calsonic colors.

The second year of JGTC produced avery divers grid with Skylines of course, but also Toyota Supra, Porsches, Ferrari F40, Lamborghini Countach and many more. 300 ZX
1994 Daytona 24h & Le Mans 24h, Nissan 300 ZX. In the USA, the 300 ZX was much more popular than the Skyline (which were only built as right-hand drive). Cunningham Racing developed these 300 ZX for the IMSA championship and in 1994 they were the cars to beat. Steve Millen won many races in de IMSA series, including the 12-hour race at Sebring and the 24-hours at Daytona. Cunningham also entered the cars at Le Mans and the #75 car took a fine class win and 5th place overall.

Skyline R33 & R34
1995 Japanese GT Championship, Nissan Skyline. Reigning champion Kageyama and won the first race of the season, driving solo. The second half of the season he drove the new R33 together with team owner Hoshino. They achieved some fine results together, but no more wins. But it was good enough for Kageyama to win his 3rd JGTC title in row.

1995 Le Mans 24h, Nissan Skyline. Nissan entered two Skyline’s in GT1 for the 1995 Le Mans race. With their all-wheel-drive, these cars were the car to beat in the Japanese GT Championship. At Le Mans they lacked top speed compared to McLaren and Ferrari and lost over 10 seconds per lap, mainly on the straights.

1998 Japanese GT Championship, Nissan Skyline. Masahiko Kageyama dominated theJapanese GT Championship for 3 years. After that titles went to McLaren and Toyota. This year the fight was on again between the R33 version of the Skyline and the Honda NSX. The Pennzoil Skyline took the title. Both Nissan teams used two different aero packages; a normal, “Low Down Force” rear wing and one with two additional spoilers on each side, the “HDF”, or High Down Force version. At a certain moment the #23 was penalized with 90 kg additional weight as can be seen on the roof of the HDF car.

The Japanese GT Championship is a very spectacular racing series which was renamed in Super GT in 2005. with lots of European top drivers and beautiful cars like the Honda NSX and Toyota Supra, AWD-cars have been banned. New in 2005 is this Nissan 350Z from Hasemi Motorsport that finished 8th in the championship.

2015 Spa-Francorchamps 24h, Nissan GT-R Nismo GT3. GT3 is gaining popularity and many manufacturers build small series of GT cars that fit the regulations. Nissan’s flagship, the GT-R is famous for its AWD system, but that is not allowed in GT3 so this one is RWD. Contrary to Super GT this one still has the 3.8 liter V6 turbo engine but restricted to approximately 530 hp. This Team RJN car finished a modest 26th in Spa, but another GT-R won the Bathurst 12h this year.
