Toyota was developing a hybrid racing car for the Le Mans LMP1 category. Plan was to test in 2012 and make its debut in 2013. But since Peugeot suddenly quit, the ACO asked Toyota if they could speed up the program and race at Le Mans already in 2012. And they did.
Toyota TS030 hybrid
2012 presentation Spa-Francorchamps, Toyota TS030 hybrid. Toyota wanted to make their debut in 2013 and were prepared to speed up and do so in 2012. It was supposed to have its first race at Spa, but because a chassis was lost during testing at Paul Ricard, the race debut was postponed to Le Mans. At Spa-Francorchamps, Toyota showed their hybrid racer to the public, it was in familiar Toyota red at that time. On the track Toyota Motorsport was supported by the French Oreca team.

2012 Le Mans 24h, Toyota TS030 hybrid. Toyota made its debut with their TS030 with a 530 hp normally aspirated 3.4 liter V8 engine with additional support from two 150 hp electric engines. Surprisingly, the Japanese squad could match the speed of Audi and was leading the race after 6 hours! Just after that, Davidson crashed the #8 car and the #7 got problems after it hit the Nissan Deltawing and retired few hours after. Later in the season Toyota’s Hybrid racers would win the FIA WEC races at Sao Paulo, Fuji and Shanghai.

2013 Le Mans 24h, Toyota TS030 hybrid. Toyota made its debut in Le Mans 2012, not with a diesel engine but a high revving V8 petrol version with hybrid support. Both cars failed to finish in the previous year, but the Japanese proved they were as quick as Audi. In 2013 however, Audi was just a little bit quicker and won the race again. The Toyotas finished the race in 2nd and 4th positions.

Toyota TS040 hybrid
2014 Le Mans 24h, Toyota TS040 hybrid. The 2014 car is the newly developed TS040 with a 3.7 liter engine and a hybrid system that drives the front axle with a combined maximum output of almost 1,000 hp while the fuel consumption was about 30% less than in previous years. This #7 lead the race for a long time until a small fire in the wiring loom of the transponder that was provided by ACO, made it retire. Their team mates in the #8 car had no such problem but lost a lot of time in a crash during a downpour in the early stages of the race.

2015 Le Mans 24h, Toyota TS040 hybrid. The Japanese should have won the race in 2014; they were quickest all season but bad luck and a crash prevented victory. Over the winter, the Toyota engineers haven been sleeping. The 2015 car was only marginally faster than the 2014 version while the competition from Audi and Porsche made enormous progression. So, in 2015 Toyota drove with #1 on the car being the reigning world champions, but they couldn’t live up to the expectations. Porsche won!

Toyota TS050 hybrid
2016 Le Mans 24h, Toyota TS050 hybrid. Toyota didn’t do well in 2015, the reigning world champion just wasn’t quick enough. Toyota Gazoo Racing, their new name, developed the TS050: new colors, improved aerodynamics, a new storage system for the electric energy and a brand new 2,4-liter V6 turbo engine. The new car couldn’t win in the WEC races but at Le Mans the Toyota was King all week long. The #6 lead the race for many hours but was delayed by a small crash. The #5 took over and was going to win until the last 5 minutes of the race. Nakajima slowed down and had to stop on the straight just after the finish line. With only 1 lap to go, Porsche took the lead and won …Toyota’s last lap was so slow that they weren’t classified at all.

2017 Le Mans 24h, Toyota TS050 hybrid. After the bad luck from last year, Toyota wanted revenge and their first victory at Le Mans. The Japanese brought a third car to France in order to defeat Porsche. The #7 Toyota took pole in a blistering 3;14,791; two seconds in front. The race was a disaster. Two Toyotas retired and the third came home in 8th position. Porsche won, but only just, in front of a whole bunch of LMP2 cars.
#8 Anthony Davidson (GB) / Sébastien Buemi (CH) / Kazuki Nakajima (J) – 8th overall / 2nd LMP1
Toyota TS050 – 2.4 liter Toyota H8909 – V6 90º twin turbo hybrid, approx 500 + 500 hp. Michelin tires. Weight 880 kg. Carbon fibre monocoque, chassisnr. TMG #17-08

2018 Le Mans 24h, Toyota TS050 hybrid. At last, Toyota won the 24-hour race of Le Mans. But it was less glamorous than hoped because after Audi, Porsche also left the championship. The only competition in LMP1 came from the Rebellion team that ran the Oreca-built chassis with normally aspirated Gibson V8 engines. Fernando Alonso took a sabbatical from Formula 1 and was one of the drivers of the winning car.
#8 Fernando Alonso (E) / Sébastien Buemi (CH) / Kazuki Nakajima (J) – 1st

2019 Le Mans 24h, Toyota TS050 hybrid. Le Mans 2019 almost was a copy of 2018. The Toyotas took a double victory with 6 laps advantage over an SMP LMP1. The only suspense was the fight between the Toyotas; last year the #8 won with two laps, this year it was only 16 seconds in front. But again Alonso, Buemi and Nakajima were the fastest.

2020 Le Mans 24h, Toyota TS050 hybrid. In 2020, Toyota took its third victory in a row, but it was a strange race that was held without public because of the COVID-19 crisis. Again, Rebellion was the toughest competitor. The Swiss surprised everybody by splitting the Toyotas in qualifying and also they took second in the race. Fernando Alonso had been replaced by Brendon Hartley who won his second Le Mans after being victorious with Porsche in 2017. It also was the last year of the LMP1 regulations, next year we will see Hypercars at Le Mans.
#8 Brendon Hartley (NZ) / Sébastien Buemi (CH) / Kazuki Nakajima (J) – 1st

Toyota GR10 Hypercar
2021 Le Mans 24h, Toyota GR010 Hypercar. Still influenced by the COVID-19 crisis, the 2021 race was held in August and could only be visited by 50.000 spectators. The race was the first Le Mans event to feature the new Hypercar regulations as its highest category, replacing LMP1. The Hypercars are bigger and heavier which could be noted in the qualifying times; about 8 seconds slower than last year. It had no impact on the result as Toyota won again, this year the #7 two laps ahead of the #8. The only competition came from Alpine (that drove last year’s Rebellion, adjusted to the new rules…) and privateer Glickenhaus.
#7 Mike Conway (GB) / Kamui Kobayashi (J) / José Maria López (RA) – 1st
Toyota GR10 hybrid – 3.5 liter Toyota H8909 – V6 90º twin turbo hybrid, approx 670 + 270 hp. Michelin tires. Weight 1040 kg. Carbon fibre monocoque, chassisnr. TMG #20-03

2024 Le Mans 24h, Toyota GR010 Hypercar. The Hypercar and LMDh catagory is booming in 2023 and 2024. The GR010 by now is the oldest car on the grid, but still very competitive. It won in 2021 and 2022. In 2023 it finished second behind Ferrari. In 2024 the Toyotas had a new livery. Both cars fought for the win in a very exciting race. The #8 car lead the race for many hours but had to settle for 5th in the end. The #7 car qualified only 23rd but managed to reach the podium only 14 seconds behind the winning Ferrari.
#7 Nyck de Vries (NL) / Kamui Kobayashi (J) / José Maria Lopez (RA) – 2nd
