At first, this collection contained only Bentley. In October 2025 I decided to add also other British brands. Now you will see familiar brands and ‘exotics’ such as Lister, Marcos, Morgan and TVR also.
Bentley
The luxury brand Bentley was famous for its racing history and Le Mans wins in the 1920’s with their Speed 7’s, but in 1931 Bentley came under the ownership of Rolls Royce and racing was over. The Volkswagen Group bought Bentley in 1998 and with technical support of Audi, the Bentleys returned to Le Mans.
In 1999 the GT1 category seized to exist and was replaced by LM GTP. Manufacturers didn’t need to build a road going version for homologation. LM GTP’s had slightly different regulations than LMP 900 such as a bit more engine power due to larger restrictors but less wider tires. Audi experimented with both concepts in Le Mans 1999, and the Joest managed LMP 900 Audi R8R (R for Roadster) won over the RTN managed LM GTP Audi R8C (Coupé). So Audi decided for the LMP1 and Joest and this was the start of a whole new era.
2001 Le Mans 24h, Bentley Speed 8. Audi wanted to revive the Bentley brand by racing it at Le Mans, but it wasn’t supposed to threaten Audi’s Le Mans victories. So the Audi R8C was used as inspiration to build the beautiful Bentley Speed 8 which used the same Audi powerplant. The Bentley’s competed in GTP and made a fine debut in the wettest Le Mans in years; the #7 had to retire with a broken gearbox (also the only weak point of the Audi’s), but the #8 car finished 3rd, 14 laps behind the two Joest Audi’s.

2002 Le Mans 24h, Bentley Speed 8. In 2002 Bentley participated with only one Speed 8. It had to let the Audi’s go in front as Joest took a convincing 1-2-3 finish. The Bentley finished 4th, 10 laps behind the 3rd Audi so it already got closer.

2003 Sebring 12h, Bentley Speed 8. A new version of the Speed 8 was presented in 2003 with a narrower cockpit and improved aerodynamics. Its debut came at Sebring where the British cars finished 3rd and 4th behind the Joest Audi’s. In the American Le Mans Series no GTP rules were in place, so the Bentleys were entered in LMP900.

2003 Le Mans 24h, Bentley Speed 8. Joest Audi didn’t participate at Le Mans, the star drivers such as Tom Kristensen and Rinaldo Capello were available for Bentley. Also, the privateer teams that raced Audi R8 showed somewhat less pace than in previous years, probably Michelin played a role in this. The way was clear for Bentley to win Le Mans and they did with a double podium and even completed 2 laps more than the winning Audi in the previous year. Mission accomplished and Bentley disappeared again from the circuits.

2013 Spa-Francorchamps 24h, Bentley Continental GT#. The entry list of the Blancpain Series already was a colorful collection of exclusive cars, but in 2014 a very special one joined; the Bentley Continental GT3. Malcolm Wilson’s M-Sport did a tremendous job to build a competitive racing car, the GT3 is 1.000 kg / 2,200 lbs lighter than the road going version. 2014 Was a learning year for the British but they already did very well, both cars finished the 24 hour race.

Jaguar
1976 European Touring Car Championship Silverstone, Jaguar XJ12 Coupé. In 1976 the once very popular group 2 category had changed, factory teams from Ford, BMW and Alfa Romeo had left the European championship. Cars were slower than before; the technical regulations were changed to give room for the “everything is allowed class” group 5. Privateer teams contested the European championship, such as Belgian Luigi BMW that was dominating the over 3 liter class. Near the end of the season, at Silverstone, this Broadspeed prepared Jaguar appeared. It took pole position and the fastest lap but retired because a wheel came off … The plan was to contest the full 1977 season with 2 cars.

1976 European Touring Car Championship Silverstone, Jaguar XJ12 Coupé. The Jaguar XJ12C made its debut in the Tourist Trophy at Silverstone in 1976. It took pole position and the fastest lap but retired. In 1977 the British wanted to campaign the entire ETCC season with a two car team, but it was a disaster. The big cats were much faster than the old BMW’s but retired almost every race; gearboxes, drive shafts, differentials, everything broke down. Also brakes were a problem, the cars were simply too heavy. A Jaguar reached the finish in only one occasion, 2nd at Nürburgring. At Silverstone the car retired just before the end, but still got classified 4th. Before end of the season British Leyland stopped the project.

1984 Spa-Francorchamps 24h, Jaguar XJS. The collaboration between Jaguar and Tom Walkinshaw Racing (TWR) started in 1982. The Jaguar XJS was surprisingly homologated for group A by the clever TWR team. It’s impossible that 5.000 cars are built in a year’s time let alone with a manual gear box and wheel arches that allow such wide rear tires … Even more surprisingly, in 1984 it beat the BMW’s over 24 hours in very changing weather conditions. Tom Walkinshaw gained Jaguar’s trust and was commissioned to build the group C prototypes afterwards.

1991 Monaco, Jaguar XJ-R 15. TWR developed this supercar for Jaguar. It had a carbon chassis that was based upon the XJR-9 that won Le Mans in 1988. Buyers could race it in the Jaguar Sport Intercontinental Challenge but most of them choose professional drivers to drive the car. Derek Warwick won the 1st race at Monaco. The second picture, I took at the Techno Classica Essen in 2016.

2010 Le Mans 24h, Jaguar XKR-S. Paul Gentilozzi races Jaguars since 2000 and In the USA he is quite successful. This year he brings ons of his big cats to Le Mans, referring to the great history that the British brand has at Le Sarthe. His big cat does growl, it sounds wonderful but it doesn’t bite. The car is much too slow and far from reliable. It retires after only 4 laps.

Lister
1996 Le Mans 24h, Lister Storm GTS. Lister Cars is a small manufacturer from England. The Lister Storm GTS debuted at the 1995 24 Hours of Le Mans but had to retire. In 1996, the team signed a sponsorship deal with football club Newcastle United and hired engineer Geoff Kingston. Changes included bodywork, brakes, and moving the engine 13 cm back to improve weight distribution. The car had to be rebuild completely after it crashed during the Daytona 24-hour race. Lotus
1997 Le Mans 24h, Lotus Elise GT1. After Colin Chapman’s Lotus wet broke, the ownership has changed many times. Now it was Proton who owned the name and thought that entering GT1 was a good idea. At first with the Esprit GT1 and later the homologation special Lotus GT1 that in theory was based on the Elise. Well, the opposite is true, it was much heavier, with a longer wheelbase to have room for a big engine. The other Elises had a 3.5 liter V6 turbo but this one, modified by Toine Hezemans, was equipped with a Chevy V8. It couldn’t match the speed of the Porsches and McLarens and also lacked reliability.

Morgan
2002 Le Mans 24h, Morgan Aero 8. This ancient looking Morgan was equipped with a BMW-based Mader V8 engine, the same as used by Spyker. It wasn’t even the slowest car at Le Mans, but certainly the most characteristic. Street Morgans use wood in their chassis, this is the first model that uses an all aluminium chassis. Unfortunately it retired with a broken engine.

But in 2003, TVR was present at Le Mans with the Tuscan 400R, powered by their speed-6 engine. The TVR’s matched the speed of the slower Porsches and Ferraris and were faster than Spyker, but a crash and lack of reliability made that none of the DeWalt sponsored cars finished.
