1965 Spa-Francorchamps 24h, BMW 1800 Ti/SA
The BMW 1500 and 1800 were the first of BMW’s “Neue Klasse”, and to position it well in the market a special series of only 200 Ti/SA cars was built as a homologation special; 5-speed gearbox, two twin Weber carburetors and a higher compression ratio were part of the Ti/SA package. BMW’s took the first four places in qualifying for the Spa 24 hours, but three retired in the long race, only the #4 car survived and won!

1969 European Touring Car Championship, BMW 2002 TiK
The two door BMW 1600 was smaller and lighter than the “Neue Klasse” and very well suited for touring car racing. The name was changed in 1602 and 2002 later, depending on the engine that was fitted. A very special engine was used in the 2002 that competed in the European Touring Car Championship in 1969. Under the group 5 regulations that were in place that year, a turbo charger was allowed. To be able to defeat the Porsche 911 with its 6-cylinder twin-spark engine, Alfa Romeo had a turbocharged GTA-SA and BMW put a KKK turbo on the 2002 Ti. With no electronics to sense detonation and no intercooler it was a daring move. It is said that the engine delivered up to 300 hp, but that wasn’t the case all the time. Reliability wasn’t very good either. Anyway, Dieter Quester won four races and was crowned European champion (#62 was used at Brands Hatch). A civil version of the BMW 2002 turbo would be introduced in 1973.

1970 Nürburgring 6h, BMW 1600
Niki Lauda wasn’t a famous formula 1 driver yet in 1970, he took every opportunity to drive and earn some money. Together with Rene Herzog, he drove the BMW 1600 in the ETCC race at the Nürburgring in division II, up to 1600 cc. Most BMW’s were 2002s that raced in division III, but the Alpina BMW qualified between the 2-liters. Unfortunately the team had to retire.

1972 DRM Championship, BMW 2002 Ti
Dieter Basche was the technical brain in the team of GS-Tuning, he was an excellent driver too. His spectacular driving style matched the BMW 2002 excellently. His main opposition were the 16-valve BDA Escorts that had more engine power but didn’t handle as well. Basche took 2 class wins and 8 podiums in 1972, finishing 3rd in the overall DRM championship behind Stuck and Fritzinger who dominated division I in their works Capri’s.

1977 DRM Norisring, BMW 2002 turbo
Schnitzer followed a different way than the other teams, they took the older 2002 chassis and mounted a 1.4 liter turbo engine. It was far more powerful than the normally aspirated competition, but also very hard to drive. But on the Norisring with its few corners and long straights it was competitive. Rally ace Walter Röhrl even lead the race for a while until he retired with a broken rear axle.

Switch to the 320i (E21 normally aspirated)
BMW Motorsport had developed a kit to transform the BMW 320i in a true blood racing car. BMW used the cars for their Junior Team, but identical cars were entered in the Deutsche Rennsport Meisterschaft (DRM) by Faltz-Alpina, GS Tuning, Heidegger and HAT. The cars were reliable, so teams entered these also in the endurance races from the world championship.
1977 DRM Championship, BMW 320i
The BMW factory team for 1977 was formed by three young talents; Winkelhock, Surer and Cheever. Surer won the season opener at Zolder. At the Norisring the three misbehaved so much they were replaced by the BMW Gentlemen team for one race. But BMW gave them a great education and all three of them made it to F1.

1980 DRM Norisring, BMW 320 turbo
During the 1979 DRM season, Schnitzer built a very extreme 320 turbo with much improved aerodynamics and low point of gravity. They changed it slightly when Hans Joachim Stuck piloted the car in 1980. His aim was to beat the Zakspeed Capri’s and he did. But he finished second in the championship behind Hans Heyer, the man that had developed the Capri and now drove an ex-works Lancia Beta Montecarlo. This BMW model is from the Norisring where Stuck finished second.

In order to score points for the championship, last year’s division II 320 turbo was put in the game. In the end it didn’t bring anything, because Stuck retired.
