Some drivers show up a lot more than others in my collection because they raced the most beautiful sports cars of which I collected a model car. So I decided to do these drivers honor by adding collections in which the driver is the main topic.
This collection is dedicated to Tom Kristensen, known as ‘Mr. Le Mans’ because he won the event 9 times and scored another 5 podiums.
Tom Kristensen
born in Hobro, Denmark on July 7, 1967

Junior categories
Tom began karting in 1984 and won several karting titles, including the 1985 Nordic Formula A series where he beat Mika Häkkinen.
In 1987 he also started in Formula Ford 1600 and in 1989 Tom raced a few events in the German Formula 3 championship. He didn’t race in 1990, but in 1991 het drove the entire season for the team of Bertram Schäfer and took the championship.
Having trouble to find a good seat in Europe, Tom moved to Japan where he raced Formula 3, touring cars and Formula 3000. Tom won the 1993 Japanese Formula 3 championship.

From 1994 the JTCC was contested by 2-liter super touring cars, the Skylines switched to JGTC.

1998 Le Mans 24h, BMW V12 LM. The BMW V12 prototype is powered by the same reliable V12 that propelled the McLarens and should have ended the race without problems. The V12 LM were designed by Williams and ran by the Bigazzi team. Both cars retired early in the race by faulty wheel bearings. The cars would be sold to privateers for next years’ race and BMW had the new cars prepared by Schnitzer.

1999 Le Mans 24h, BMW V12 LMR. After last year’s disaster, BMW developed a brand new car and had it run by the very experienced Schnitzer Team. The #15 won Le Mans after a fierce battle with Toyota, the #17 was crashed by Lehto with just 3 hours to go while he was in the lead by 4 laps. A stuck throttle was the cause, it could have been Kristensen’s 2nd Le Mans win.

Audi
2000 Sebring 12h, Joest Audi R8. The first race of the new Audi R8 in its new colors. Audi entered two cars in the American Le Mans Series because the FIA Sports Car Championship was a joke. The team was managed by Joest but the official entrant was Audi Sport North America. They had to compete against two BMW V12 LMR’s that won Le Mans in 1999 and drove a last season in the ALMS. Audi’s took the first two places, BMW came home in 3rd just 1 lap down and 4th (2 laps down), the local American competition was 20 laps down. It showed how strong the new Audi’s were.

2000 Le Mans 24h, Joest Audi R8. Many factory teams quit after 1999; Mercedes, BMW, Toyota … Porsche already one year before. So it’s tempting to say that Audi had it easy. The Audi’s had more than 25 laps on their closest rivals, so the competition was weak, but the performance of the Audi R8’s was stunning; all three Audi’s matched or improved the number of laps of the winning BMW in 1999.
#7 Michele Alboreto (I) / Rinaldo Capello (I) / Christian Abt (D) – 3rd
#8 Tom Kristensen (DK) / Frank Biela (D) / Emanuele Pirro (I) – 1st

2001 Le Mans 24h, Joest Audi R8. In 2000, the red Audi won in front of the yellow one. The black was third. In 2001 Joest Audi entered only two cars, additionally, both Stefan Johansson and Champion Racing had a 2000 spec Audi R8. Again the red Audi won, the yellow was second. The Audi based Bentley was third. The race was run in torrential rain and only 321 laps were completed against 369 in the previous year.

2003 Le Mans 24h, Bentley Speed 8. Joest Audi didn’t participate at Le Mans, the star drivers such as Tom Kristensen and Rinaldo Capello were available for Bentley. Also, the privateer teams that raced Audi R8 showed somewhat less pace than in previous years, probably Michelin played a role in this. The way was clear for Bentley to win Le Mans and they did with a double podium and even completed 2 laps more than the winning Audi in the previous year. Mission accomplished and Bentley disappeared again from the circuits.

2004 Le Mans 24h, Team Goh Audi R8. The semi-works Audi’s from Team Veloqx, Champion Racing and Team Goh were the favorites in this year’s Le Mans. 2005 Sebring 12h, Champion racing Audi R8. The only competition that the Audi North America / Champion Racing Audi’s had was from their own teammates. The advantage on the third placed Lola was no less than 20 laps.

2005 Le Mans 24h, Champion Racing Audi R8. The new aerodynamic rules penalized the Audi’s and now they had stiff competition from the Pescarolo’s which profited more from the new rules. But in the end it were Audi and #3 that won. The second Champion Audi had to settle for 3rd place as one of the Pescarolo’s slipped to second.

2006 Sebring 12h, Joest Audi R10 TDI. The Audi factory returned to endurance racing and this year it was with a brand new car with a revolutionary turbodiesel engine. It was a bold move, fitting such a heavy engine in a small car. The car was silent, fast, and reliable. The R10 TDI made its debut at Sebring … with a win even after it started from the pit lane. There wasn’t much competition for the Audi’s in the American Le Mans Series, the oil-burners won all ten races in 2006.

2006 Le Mans 24h, Joest Audi R10 TDI. Audi was the favorite for Le Mans. The car was based on the successful R8 but had a much longer wheelbase to accomodate the 5.5 liter V12 diesel. It was heavier also, but the enormous torque of the diesel engine compensated that easily. Both Audi’s were on the podium, but one of the Pescarolo-Judds managed to get in second place 4 laps behind the winning Audi from Tom Kristensen.

2008 Le Mans 24h, Joest Audi R10 TDI. Audi was not the favorite despite its wins in 2006 and 2007. The Peugeots were so much quicker and already won other races in the Le mans Series. But the #2 Audi managed to stay in striking distance and attacked when it started to rain. Audi won with less than a lap in front of the first Peugeot.

2009 Sebring 12h, Joest Audi R15 TDI. It was clear that the R10 TDI wasn’t quick enough anymore compared to Peugeot and couldn’t be developed much more. So a new car was built; the all new R15 TDI had a somewhat lighter V10 engine, very different aerodynamics and looked a bit like a shark. In the season opener at Sebring the new car won the 12 hour race with only 22 second margin over the first Peugeot. The second Audi finished third, 2 laps behind.

2009 Le Mans 24h, Joest Audi R15 TDI. Audi won 3 times Le Mans 3 times in a row with their R10 TDI, but that wasn’t up to speed anymore to defeat the Peugeot another year. The all new R15 TDI isn’t quick enough either at Le Mans and this year the Peugeots made no mistakes, so it was a double victory for the French team. The best Audi team was the Kristensen lead car that finished third.

2010 Le Mans 24h, Joest Audi R15 TDI+. Audi was defeated by Peugeot in 2009. For 2010 they changed their car considerably and renamed it R15 TDI+. But again Peugeot was faster and when the #7 car was forced of the track by a slower car, it didn’t look good for Audi. But Peugeot had some small problems and when they increased their speed to stay in front, their engines blew one after the other. Audi took a surprising 1-2-3 victory and broke the almost 40 year old distance record. Tom Kristensen in the #7 car finished 3rd, but would probably have won without the early accident.

2011 Le Mans 24h, Joest Audi R18 TDI. The rules for 2011 have changed. Audi and Peugeot have new cars with smaller diesel engines, but they still dominate LMP1. Audi uses a 3.7 liter V6 TDI which has less power then the previous versions but also is 30% more fuel efficient. In Le Mans Audi was just a bit quicker dan Peugeot all weekend. Allan McNish misjudges the speed and line of a Ferrari GT and crashes the #2 Audi heavily, Mike Rockenfeller has a similar kind of crash in the night in the #1. The remaining Audi had to fight of three Peugeots, it won and finished only 13.8 seconds ahead of the first Peugeot.

2013 Le Mans 24h, Joest Audi e-tron Quattro. Audi has ruled Le Mans for years, but in 2012 a new challenger appeared by the name of Toyota. This year the battle continued. Toyota’s didn’t crash and neither did they retire, but they just couldn’t keep up with the improved Audi. This #2 car won with the experienced Tom Kristensen and Allan McNish who drove together with young Loïc Duval. Their advantage over the first Toyota was just 1 lap.
