#D01 Stefan Bellof

Some drivers showe up a lot more than others in my collection because they raced the most beautiful sports cars of which I collected a model car. So I decided to do these drivers honor by adding collections in which the driver is the main topic.
Collection #D01 dedicated to Stefan Bellof is the first of many.

Junior categories

Stefan began karting in 1973 and won the German Championship in both 1979 and 1980.

In 1979 he also started in Formula Ford 1600. In his first full season in 1980, Stefan won 8 races and scored multiple podiums, he became German champion. The next year was less successful but he still won 5 times. In that same year he contested a few races in Formula Ford 2000.

Also in 1981 Stefan made the step to Formula 3 in the team from Bertram Schäfer. He led the championship going into the final race but didn’t score any points and ended up in 3rd in the championship behind Frank Jelinski and Franz Konrad.

Formula 2, Formula 1

In 1982 Stefan Bellof contested Formula 2 in a Maurer. He won on his debut race at the Nürburgring and two weeks later also the Hockenheim round. He scored a few second places and ended the season in 4th place, the championship was won by Corrado Fabi (brother of F1 pilot Teo Fabi). The Maurer wasn’t fast enough in 1983 and Bellof finished on the podium twice and only 9th in the championship.

In 1984, he joined Tyrrell to race in Formula 1, no points were scored because Tyrrell was disqualified for being underweight. In 1985 the Tyrrell with its normally aspirated engine was underpowered compared to the competition that almost all used turbo engines. At Monaco in the pouring rain, Stefan scored a brilliant 4th position. The raced was red flagged otherwise it could have been a battle with Ayrton Senna for victory.

Sportscars

1982 DRM Hockenheim, Porsche 936/82. For the 1982 season, Kremer build a completely new 936 based on the original design using factory spare parts. It had the rear wing of the 936/81 and a large diffuser, but still used the old air-cooled 2.1 liter engine. It was recognized by Porsche as a true 936 and received chassisnr. #005. Rolf Stommelen used the car with #8 in the DRM championship until he switched to the CK5 during the season. The last races of the season, the 936 was raced by Stefan Bellof using #23.

The model shows NACA air-intakes similar to the 936/81 but that is wrong because the air-cooled engine had no radiators.

1982 Spa-Francorchamps 1000 km, Kremer Porsche CK5. The Kremer team did not have the new Porsche 956 yet, so just like Joest, they built their own group C car based upon a tube frame of the Porsche 936 and fitted a Porsche 935 engine. Stefan Bellof made his debut in the world championship together with the experienced Rolf Stommelen. The team qualified 5th but retired. Stommelen used the same car with #8 in the second half of the DRM championship.
