1970 Le Mans 24h, Porsche 917L. Before Anatole Lapine, chief designer at Porsche, came up with the idea of the Pink Pig and already designed some other interesting liveries. The Le Mans Porsche 917L was white first, Lapine painted the purple swirls on it just in time for qualifying, before the race the bright green was added.

1970 Watkins Glen 6h, Porsche 917K. The hippie 917 also competed in Watkins Glen where it finished 9th. Remarkable is that the Le Mans car ran on Goodyear tires while this one – in the same season – is fitted with Firestones. Martini Racing competed in many races this year with the #021 chassis, most of these in the Interseries with Gijs van Lennep as driver.

1971 Le Mans 24h, Porsche 917/20. The new designed Porsche 917/20 was wider and shorter than the regular 917L. Count Rossi – the main sponsor – refused to paint it in the famous Martini livery or even put its name on it. Someone called the car a pig and Porsche designer Anatole Lapine‘s idea for the new livery was born. It was the first of the Pink Porsches and quite a few would follow.

1994 Le Mans 24h, Venturi LM 600-Renault. This was the comeback of art lover Hervé Poulain, also responsible for the famous BMW Art Cars in the 70’s. Venturi is a small French manufacturer that uses Renault engines for its cars. In this case the PRV6 engine was equipped with two turbo’s and delivered about 600 hp. Only one of six started Venturi managed to finish, but it was not this one with its special livery designed by Arman.

A Porsche GT2 that is decorated with naked lady by the French artist Georges Wolinski. Wolinski got killed in the terrorist attack on magazine Charlie Hebdo in Paris in January 2015 …

They pulled the car after one stint because the team didn’t have a sponsor and it was just going to wear the car out. If you think that the car shows some resemblance with the 2024 “Rexy” …. no coincidence, Gunnar was involved in that Car too.

2024 IMSA, Porsche 911 GT3R “Roxy”. AO Racing, founded by P.J. Hyett and Gunnar Jeannette put some remarkable racing cars on track (Gunnar Jeannette has quite a history on this). In 2023 they raced “Rexy”, a green Tyrannosaurus Rex Porsche 911. In fact there were several: a GT3 R for the GTD category in the IMSA Championship and a RSR-19 GTE from Project 1 that has been used in Le Mans. During the IMSA season, “Rexy” got company from its pink sister “Roxy”, a GT3 R as well. Later “Spike” joined the family.

2024 Le Mans 24h, Oreca 07 – Gibson. One of the most remarkable cars on track is this pink Oreca, nicknamed “Spike”. Spike is a pink dragon with little orange wings and comes from the AO Racing stable, just as Rexy and Roxy. It’s not only funny but fast also. Spike finishes 20th overall and 3rd in the LMP2 category. In Le Mans it used #14, in the IMSA championship the car runs #99.

2000 Adelaide, Joest Audi R8. The “Race of a Thousand Years” was held on the 31st of December 2000 in Adelaide (Australia) and was part of the Asian and American Le Mans Series in which Audi and BMW competed. The #78 Audi had its usual livery, but the #77 was a real Art Car. The idea was born in the Audi design centre under the leadership of Audi designer Frank Lamberty, who converted the exterior of the R8 into a crocodile in the middle of a billabong, its natural habit. Allan McNish and Rinaldo Capello took the win and the ALMS title.

Both cars had a beautiful Australian art livery, one with a redback spider, the other one with a Kangaroo roadsign.

2015 Bathurst 12h, Audi R8 LMS Ultra. The Bathurst 12 hours is the biggest en most well known GT race in the southern hemispere. Team Phoenix travels to Australia each year to compete with their Audi R8 LMS. The livery of the car is often specially designed for this race, this year it was very special just like the Aud R8 that ran in Adelaide in 2000. One of the drivers was Felix Baumgartner who became famous because of his free fall parachute jump from 39 km height.

2010 Japanese Super GT, Porsche 911 GT3 RSR. Hatsune Miku is very popular in Japan. She is a hologram projection that performs for a live audience together with a real band. She also sponsors the Porsche from Goodsmile Racing in the GT300 category of the Super GT Championship. The team drove two different cars this season. It started with this older 996 version, the second part they drove the newer 997 Porsche.

1972 Le Mans 24h, Lola T280. The Bonnier Lola T280 with Ford Cosworth V8 F1 engine had to compete with the factory teams from Matra and Alfa Romeo. The Swiss Gruyere Cheese car was competitive, Gijs van Lennep setting the fastest lap, but later Joakim Bonnier died in a horrific accident after he hit a Ferrari GT on the straight towards Indianapolis and got launched into the trees.

1987 Le Mans 24h, Argo JM19. Argo Racing Cars is a British racing constructor founded by Swiss designer Jo Marquart and British mechanic Nick Jordan. At first they constructed cars for Formula 3, Super Vee and Atlantic. When the prototypes gained interest they switched to Group C and IMSA GTP cars. Their chassis could handle several engine suppliers. This Dahm entered Argo was equipped with a Porsche flat-6 turbo engine.

2002 Le Mans 24h, Auto-EXE LMP02. The Auto-Exe is a French build Welter (WR) equipped with a Mazda rotary engine. It was Yojira Terada‘s 25th Le Mans from which he competed most in Mazda’s. It brought him no luck as he was the first to abandon this year’s race with a broken gearbox. So, no fireworks for the little prototype despite it’s colorful livery.

2007 Le Mans 24h, Creation CA07. At Le Mans the trademark blue and yellow livery was abandoned in favour of an art-car design by famous artist Mark Olson. He came up with a concept called ‘The Children of Le Mans’. The Creation was powered by the new 5.5 liter Judd V10 engine but suffered from overheating and didn’t finish te race.

2013 Le Mans 24h, Morgan LMP2. This Morgan is no Morgan at all, it’s a French built Pescarolo that is managed by also French Oak Racing. Oak Racing, owned by Jacques Nicolet has developed into the leading team in LMP2. Their two cars finished first and second this year, but this art-car – designed by artist Fernando Costa as a tribute to the iconic 24-hour race – failed to finish.

The car received a new livery designed by Victor Vullo. The bright orange, light blue and white could have been a Gulf livery, simply beautiful! And, just as important for DKR, they again took 3rd in Pro-Am.

2011 Le Mans 24h, Porsche 911 GT3 RSR. Belgian Prospeed Competition has become a very professional team that gets invited for Le Mans each year with at least 1 car. In 2010 the driver line up were amateurs, this year some very fast professionals drove the car. Qualifying time was no less than 10 seconds faster than the previous year, the finish result however did not improve because of problems during the race.

2019 Le Mans 24h, Porsche 911 RSR-17. The Project 1 Porsche is a design by Richard Phillips and brought to life in cooperation with Porsche Digital. After a giant battle with the Keating Ford GT, the Porsche finished second in GTE-Am. But after the race, the Ford was disqualified because of a too large fuel tank. The team got promoted and thus is an official Le Mans class winner.
