#116 LUI Magazine

LUI was a French erotic magazine established in 1963, the French counterpart of PLAYBOY which saw the light 10 years before. Just as its American example, it expended over more countries. The German version was active in sponsoring motorsports, especially drivers such as Jochen Mass, Manuel Reuter and Peter Oberndorfer.

Drivers came from France of course, but also quit a many form The Netherlands, Germany and Italy. German Wolfgang Schütz was the first champion, another fast German driver was Peter Oberndorfer. He finished the 1981 championship in 6th position.

1985 DTM Championship, Alfa Romeo Alfetta GTV6
The ‘Deutsche Produktionswagen Meisterschaft’, was becoming the new premier championship in Germany. No prototypes or GT’s, but group A touring cars. Teams competed with many different cars; BMW 635 CSi, but also BMW 323i, Rover Vitesse, Ford Sierra XR4 Ti, Escort turbo, Volvo 240 turbo, Chevrolet Camaro, Ford Mustang and others. The RSM team from Helmut Marko entered two Alfa Romeo GTV 6. The best sounding car on the grid, but just not fast enough. Peter Oberndorfer finished all races in the points but never better than 5th position, which also was his position in the championship. The second car was driven by Volker Weidler at the season opener at Zolder and by Franz Klammer in all other races.

1986 Porsche 944 turbo Cup
1986 was the first year of the Porsche 944 turbo Cup. The cars looked quite standard but had a special stiffened suspension, limited slip differential and an improved turbo unit, in total 192 cup 944’s have been built. Races were spectacular because the cars are much easier to drift than for instance a 911. Joachim Winkelhock was the first champion. Porsche offered a VIP car for guest drivers, one of them being works pilot Jochen Mass. Not much more information can be found.

1987 DTM Championship, Ford Sierra XR4Ti
Group A was gaining popularity very fast. BMW. Jaguar, Rover and Volvo all had competitive cars but Ford didn’t. The 2.8 liter 6 cylinder Sierra XR4i was far too weak to be competitive. A solution was found in the USA where the Sierra was being sold as Merkur XR4Ti. The car had an old 8 valve Ford Pinto 4 cylinder engine, but with a large turbo! In 1987, Manuel Reuter drove the LUI sponsored XR4Ti to two victories and second place in the championship, just 3 points behind champion Eric van de Poele.

1987 Nürburgring 1000 km, Porsche 962C
Walter Brun entered three cars for the Nürburgring 1000 km race that counted for the FIA World Championship. Two were Thompson chassis specially built for Brun Motorsport, this was an original Porsche 962C and it was the best placed Brun car. It finished third behind a Silk Cut Jaguar and Rothmans Joest Porsche.

1987 Le Mans 24h, Porsche 962C
However Brun Motorsport didn’t win last year’s Le Mans, they were allowed to start the race with the prestigious #1. Joest Racing won in 1986, but they preferred to keep their lucky number #7. Brun was the reigning teams world champion from 1986, so they got the #1. The Brun entry was piloted by three French drivers of which Paul Belmondo jr. was the most well known, probably he brought the LUI sponsorship. My guess is that this is the French LUI magazine that supported the team, not the German version which is on all the other cars in this collection.
