It’s nice to race different race tracks all over the continent with your GT or sports car, but first … you have to get there. In the history of motorsport we saw many great transporters, of which I have a few in my collection. Enjoy this somewhat different page!
Mercedes-Benz
1955 Blauwes Wunder, Mercedes Schnelltransporter. The Mercedes-Benz factory team had need of a high-speed transporter that could bring a racing car from the track to the workshop and back. Vans usually didn’t exceed 50 mph in those days, this was double as fast. It had design parts of the Mercedes 180SL and 300SL and the 6-cylinder 192 hp engine of the last. The original car has been scrapped in 1967, nowadays Mercedes shows a well built replica. The car has the nickname “Blue wonder”.

Ferrari
1957 FIAT 642 RN2 Bartoletti. The racing teams of Scuderia Ferrari and Maserati needed appropriate means to transport their race cars to European racetracks and back to their headquarters. A total of four FIAT 642’s were adapted by coach builder Bartoletti.

Jägermeister
1974 Mercedes-Benz LP608, Jägermeister. Little details are known from Dieter Bohnhorst and his Porsche 914/6. Quite sure is that the car has been prepared by Porsche Motorsport. Bohnhorst competed in GT races, hill climbs and even slalom events with his little Jägermeister sponsored car. He used a Mercedes-Benz LP608 as transporter.

1973 Mercedes-Benz LP608, BMW Motorsport. In 1973 BMW competed with a works entry and a transporter in the same outfit is part of it.

John Wyer / Gulf
1968 – 1970 Mercedes O317K, John Wyer / Gulf Racing. JWA Automotive (John Wyer’s team) was sponsored by Gulf and raced the Mirage M1 in 1967, Ford GT 40’s in 1968 and 1969, Porsche 908/03 and 917 in 1970 and 1971 and again Mirages until 1975. His big Gulf trailers were a familiar sight in the paddock in these years.

Martini Porsche
1973 – 1975 Mercedes O317K, Martini Porsche. The Martini Porsche Carrera RSR were silver and so were the Mercedes transporters form Porsche.

Porsche Motorsport
1981 Mercedes O317K, Porsche AG. The old Mercedes were still in use in 1980. These had been painted in Essex colors for the 1979 Le Mans, and this year they only removed Essex and kept the blue and red striping.

Rothmans Porsche
1982 – 1987 MAN 19.320 Büssing, Rothmans Porsche. Teams got more professional and bigger and needed more space to carry cars and equipment. In the Group C era, Porsche used this MAN truck and trailer for their Porsches 956, 961 and 962.
