#125 Oreca (manufacturer)

Founded in 1973 by Hugues de Chaunac, the ORECA group has built 50 years of history through Le Mans victories, prototype development and sport business.


Chrysler thought that in order to adapt their GTS/R race car not only for North American but also European circuits, they would require outside assistance. An agreement was made with the French racing and engineering firm Oreca, who had many years of experience in sports car racing. Oreca would construct and maintain the racing cars in their shops, as well as run Chrysler’s official factory teams in Europe. In total, 57 Viper GTS-Rs would be built, of which 18 by Oreca. A few of these are presented here.

2011 Le Mans 24h, Oreca 01 hybrid
Swiss Hope Racing bring this ecological racing car to Le Mans. The 4 cylinder Lehmann / VW petrol engine is supported by a basic hybrid system. The F1-style Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS) was not well developed yet, the car suffers from electrical problems and retires in the end. Even former winner Jan Lammers in his 22nd Le Mans can’t change this.

2011 Le Mans 24h, Oreca 03 – Nissan
In the new LMP2 class, cars use production based engines, mostly from Nissan, Honda-HPD and Judd-BMW. Chassis are affordable and LMP2 has become a very attractive category in only two years time. This Oreca – Nissan is entered by French Signatech team with support from Playstation. Spanish driver Lucas Ordoñez was the first winner of the Playstation Challenge. He proved he is not only good on a game computer, but also in real. The team finished 2nd in class.

This Oreca 03 was powered by a BMW-based Judd V8 engine. The Swiss Race Performance entry improved only little from its 21st grid position, finishing 19th overall and 6th in class.

2013 Le Mans 24h, Alpine A450 – Nissan
Using historic names for modern cars is a hot topic in LMP2 category in 2013. A Zytek looks like a Caterham, the Morgan LMP2 is a rebadged Oak-Pescarolo and this Alpine is nothing more than an Oreca 03 with V8 Nissan engine. Signatech uses the name and logos of historic brand Alpine on this car, of course with approval of Renault that wants to relaunch the Alpine brand. A bit of racing success would help, but the beautiful car finished only 8th in class and 14th overall.

2016 Le Mans 24h, Oreca 03 – Nissan
Viper Exchange were only seventh on the reserve list for the 24 hours with their GTE Viper. Chance of being allowed to start were minimal, so Ben Keating found an alternative. Irish Murphy Racing is a regular contender in the ELMS and managed to get invited for the race. Sponsored by GasMonkey, an energy drink named after the famous Dallas based garage from Discovery Channel, the team took the wheel of the Oreca 03. It is already an older design so a good result couldn’t be expected.

2015 Le Mans 24h, Oreca 05 – Nissan
Battle in LMP goes between Gibson and the French makes Oreca and Ligier. The Oreca is very aerodynamic and always very good on fast tracks such as Le Mans. One of the Oreca teams is this entry from Hong Kong with Nicolas Lapierre behind the wheel. They manage to win their class less than a minute in front of last year’s winner, team Jota. The G-Drive Ligier finishes 3rd in class in the same lap. The Oreca 05 is much safer than the 03 but has only been built in 2015. Many existing Oreca 05 have been converted into its successor, the Oreca 07.

The Alpine A460 has its own homologation but it is just an Oreca 05. Oreca’s are doing well at fast tracks such as Le Mans. But the Signatech team performed very well over the entire season because they also win the LMP2 teams and drivers titles in FIA WEC.

2015 Le Mans 24h, Rebellion R-One – AER
This year the Rebellion R-One was back after its great debut last year, but the older normally aspirated Toyota engine had been replaced by a new AER V6 twin turbo power unit. Both Rebellions had problems, the #13 one even crashed once, but both managed to finish the race in 18th and 23rd positions.

2018 Le Mans 24h, Rebellion R13 – Gibson
Based on the Oreca 07 LMP2-car, the Rebellion R13 is the leading privateer team in Le Mans and the FIA World Endurance Championship. The car is powered by the Gibson GL458 non-hybrid engine that delivers up to 670 hp in LMP1 trim. It couldn’t match the hybrid Toyota’s but achieved a fantastic 3rd and 4th place in Le Mans. Despite its stronger engine that requires more cooling (with the same dimensions as the LMP Gibson powerplant), the R13 is lighter than the Oreca 07 and delivers substantial more downforce.

2020 Le Mans 24h, Rebellion R13 – Gibson
It was Rebellion’s last year at Le Mans. Als the last year under the LMP1 regulations. Next year LMP1 will be replaced by Hypercar and you have to be a car manufacturer to compete in this. So Rebellion sells their cars to Alpine that could use it another year with some adjustments (higher weight, less power). But Rebellion goes out on a high; the #1 car finished 2nd. Their team mates with #3 are 4th.

Rebellion raced the R-One for three seasons and in 2017 they did a step back and ran in LMP2. This gave them the opportunity to compete also in the Daytona 24h, a race that is part of the IMSA championship in the Prototype category. Neel Jani qualified 3rd, but in the race the team only finished 31st.

2017 Le Mans 24h, Oreca 07 – Gibson
A LMP2 car almost won Le Mans! Everybody expected a big battle between the LMP1 hybrids from Porsche and Toyota, but these had all kinds of trouble. The #38 Oreca had moved in 2nd place overall with some 4 hours to go when the leading Porsche had to retire. Suddenly a LMP2 was leading. The remaining Porsche 919 was more than a lap down but recovering fast and eventually won the race a lap ahead of the Jacky Chan entry.

After Le Mans 2019, Racing Team Nederland switched to the Oreca 07 and TDS as technical supplier. It was an instant success: A first LMP2 pole position and podium were achieved in Silverstone and the 6 hours of Fuji resulted in a victory. Le Mans was less successful unfortunately.

Ben Keating in the PR1 Mathiasen Oreca took pole-position in LMP2 for the Daytona 24-hour race. The car suffered some problems that threw it back in the ranking and finally the team had to retire in the last hour, but not without setting the fastest lap in class.

Beitstke Visser, Tatiana Calderón and Sophia Flörsch, shared the Richard Mille Oreca LMP2 car, just as they did in 2020. They scored a fine 13th place back then, but this year the race was over after 74 laps. Franco Colapinto spun his LMP2 on a wet track and crashed into Sophia Flörsch, he could proceed but the #1 car hit the wall and had to retire especially after the stationary car was hit again … (see video)

One of the most remarkable cars on track is this pink Oreca, nicknamed “Spike”. Spike is a dragon with little orange wings and comes from the AO Racing stable, just as Rexy and Roxy. It’s not only funny but fast also. Spike finishes 20th overall and 3rd in the LMP2 category. In the IMSA championship the car runs #99.

DKR Engineering from Luxembourg finished 3rd in LMP2 Pro-Am in 2022 and 2023. The target was to do it again in 2024. The car received a new livery designed by Victor Vullo. The bright orange, light blue and white could have been a Gulf livery, simply beautiful! And, just as important for DKR, they again took 3rd in Pro-Am.

2021 Le Mans 24h, Alpine A480 – Gibson
Alpine enters the Hypercar category with a car which is neither a Hypercar nor an Alpine. The car is based on a LMP2 Oreca 07 fitted with a Gibson 458-engine and ran as Rebellion R13 in the previous years. It is not designed as Hypercar, but legacy LMP1 cars are allowed to run in Hypercar after some adjustments such as an increase of weight and decrease of engine power.

2024 Le Mans 24h, Alpine A424 – Mecachrome
In 2024 Alpine entered the FIA WEC with an actual Hypercar, the Alpine A424. In fact it is a LMDh, build by Oreca that also developed the Acura’s that race in the IMSA championship. Both have the ‘wing’ over the front of the car. At Le Mans, the Alpines were quite fast in qualifying – 5th and 9th – but the Formula 2 based Mecachrome engines weren’t reliable. The #35’s engine seized after 75 laps, the #36 did only 13 laps more.

In 2026, Hyundai’s premium brand Genesis entered Endurance Racing. The car has been built by Oreca and I’m sure a model will appear here when available.


Ferrari used to partner with Michelotto or Dallara for the production of small series for competition purposes. In 2022, Oreca was chosen as the new partner and the French company builds the new Ferrari 296 GT3 cars.

2023 Nürburgring 24h, Ferrari 296 GT3
German Frikadelli Racing is a long time contender in the Nürburgring Endurance Series and the 24-hour race. They have been a Porsche client for many, many years. In 2023 Frikadelli switched to the new Ferrari 296 GT3. A new developed car with a more compact 3.0 liter V6 twin turbo engine that is also the basis for the LM Hybrid 499P. It brings Frikadelli great success as they win the most grueling 24-hour race.

2024 Le Mans 24h, Ferrari 296 GT3
The GTE category came to an end and the ACO turned to GT3 as its successor. The GT3 platform is incredibly popular and competitive. Mike Wainwright’s GR Racing had been racing Porsches for many years, but in the new format he switched to Ferrari. It didn’t bring the success the team had with the Porsches. The car wasn’t ready for the practice and qualifying and had to start from the back.
