Red Bull nowadays is very famous as sponsor in many events and extreme sports and owns not one, but two Formula 1 teams. But in the 1990’s the Austrian energy drink was just starting to gain brand awareness. Dietrich Mateschitz chose the slogan “Red Bull gives you Wings” and began sponsoring motorsports, at first mainly Austrian drivers such as Gerhard Berger, Dieter Quester and Karl Wendlinger.
It all started with sponsoring Austrian drivers
1995 Austrian Touring Car Championship, BMW M3 GTR. Dieter Quester has been racing on a high level for many years. In 1995 he drove this BMW M3 GTR in the national championship. Without success, the title was won by another legend: Walter Lechner in a Ford Escort Cosworth RS.

2005 FIA GT Championship, Maserati MC12 GT1. Maserati returned to GT racing with this MC12, technically based on the Ferrari Enzo. This car for Austrian Karl Wendlinger and Maserati test driver Bertonlini was entered in the FIA GT Championship with support of Red Bull. They won twice and team JMB finished second in the championship.

2003 DTM Championship, Audi TT-R. Team Abt-Sportsline enters 4 cars for the spectacular DTM championship in 2003. Two in Hasseröder yellow (including reigning champion Laurent Aiello) and two in Red Bull blue. The 4-door saloons were replaced by 2-doors coupe models: BMW returned to the series with their M3, Mercedes used the C-class coupe and Audi entered their beautiful A5. Young Spaniard Miguel Molina drove the Team Phoenix Audi in the famous colors of sponsor Red Bull. He had a difficult season, scoring only 8 points which saw him finish the season in 18th position.

2013 Australian V8 Supercars, Holden Commodore VF. The Australian V8 Supercar championship is a very popular series, a kind of mix between NASCAR and DTM. Since many years the battle goes on between the locally built Ford Falcon and General Motors Holden Commodore. The Holdens are the car to beat this year. And among the Holdens, Jamie Whincup rules: he confirms his #1 and wins his 5th V8 Supercar title in his Red Bull sponsored Holden. Whincup is known for his robust driving style, but that is something they can appreciate down under.

Sébastien Loeb is a nine time (!) world champion rally and sponsored by Red Bull. He has nothing to prove in rally anymore, now he also likes to race on race tracks.
2010 Barcelona Open GT, Porsche 911 GT3 R. The Red Bull sponsored WRC drivers Sébastien Loeb and Dani Sordo participated in a round for the Spanish GT Open championship. The first race they finished 14th, the second race ended in the gravel trap at the start. You would expect that rally drivers like gravel, but this was not the case.

2010 Porsche Cup Asia, Porsche 911 GT3 Cup. Marchy Lee from Hongkong is one of the most talented Asian drivers. He took the Formula BMW title in convincing way in 2004 and even tested a F1 Minardi. Budget problems kept him form developing his international carreer. Until 2010 when Red Bull sponsored a season in the Asian Porsche Cup. Lee finished in 2nd position after great fights with Christian Menzel and Alex Yoong.

Because of the continuous increase of interest in the GT3 category, Callaway rebuild some C6.R to match GT3 specs. 2018 Japanese Super GT Championship Autopolis, Lexus LC500. Plans were to synchronize the Japanese Super GT regulations with this of the German DTM. Both championships agreed on the use of 4-cylinder turbo engines. The RI4AG version of Toyota was considered to be the most powerful. The merger between SGT and DTM never happened. The Germans now use the GT3 format for their championship, similar cars race in Super GT in the lower GT300 category. The GT500’s are much faster and certainly have more than 500 hp.

Red Bull junior Liam Lawson got the opportunity to compete the entire season in an AF Corse prepared Ferrari. He won the first race at Monza and would win two more at the Red Bull Ring. In the last race of the season, he got crashed out by Audi driver Kelvin van der Linde and because some Mercedes drivers slowed down to let Maxi Götz pass, Liam lost the championship by 3 points.
