Gianpiero Moretti was an Italian racing driver from Milan. He founded the MOMO company, MOretii MOnza. MOMO started as producer of leather steering wheels and became the supplier for Ferrari after he made a steering wheel for the Formula 1 Ferrari of John Surtees. The brand expanded to more car accessories such as seats, aluminium wheels, leather gear sticks and fire proof racing clothing and shoes.

Porsche 935
1979 Giro d’Italia, Porsche 935
The Giro d’Italia automobilistico was an automobile race around Italy, historically first held in 1901, then reinstituted as annual event between 1973 and 1980, resurrected for 1988 and 1989, and again in 2011. It contains races on famous tracks but also hill-climbs and tarmac rally stages. Gianpiero Moretti participated in 1979 with his Porsche 935, at a certain moment he lost his front spoiler and had to replace that with a white Porsche Carrera front. I found no pictures of that, but the scale model comes with that additional front. The two works Lancia Betas that finished first and second got disqualified after Moretti filed a protest because both Lancias had used a motorway in a section where that wasn’t permitted. The Moretti team had finished third and inherited the victory. MOMO temporarily lost the Ferrari account because of that, Ferrari and Lancia both belonged to the same FIAT concern and that was not amused at all…

1980 Daytona finale 250 miles, Porsche 935J
Gianpiero Moretti competed in the IMSA GT Championship with a Joest prepared Porsche 935J. The championship was being dominated by Porsches, especially by the cars from Barbour, Preston Henn, Whittington Brothers and Interscope. It took until the end of the season before Moretti gained succes: he won the 2nd heat at Road Atlatna and together with Reinhold Joest the final at Daytona. Joest had already won the 24 hours of Daytona earlier this year with this very same car, but that was without Moretti.

Joest built a replica of the famous 1978 Moby Dick Porsche to be used by Jochen Mass in the DRM in 1981. After that, Gianpiero Moretti bought the car, had it adapted to IMSA GTX specs and raced in the world championship, DRM and in the US. He finished 7th at Silverstone with Mauro Baldi. The pictures from the #16 car are taken by me during the DRM race in 1982 at Wunstorf (an airfield track in Germany).

Renault Cup
1984 Renault 5 turbo cup, Renault 5 turbo
Sicilian Massimo Sigala is a very experienced Cup driver. He won the Italian Renault 5 cup in 1978, the European Alfasud Sprint Cup in 1979, participated in all seasons of the European Renault 5 turbo Cup. In 1984 he finished 5th in the championship and took victory at Jan Lammers‘ hometrack in Zandvoort. After the Renault 5 Turbo Cup ended, he switched to its successor the Renault V6 turbo cup and won the championship in 1986, 1987 and 1988. In 1989 and 1990 he also won the Renault 21 Turbo Cup. In between he raced Porsche 956s often together with Oscar Larrauri.

1985 Renault Elf Europa Cup, Renault Alpine V6 Turbo
The Renault 5 Turbo cup lasted 4 years, its successor was the Renault Alpine V6 Turbo Cup. Many of the same drivers switched to the new Cup such as Jan Lammers, Michael Bleekemolen, Wolfgang Schütz, Joel Gouhier, Massimo Sigala and also Argentinian Oscar Larrauri. These last two would be the only champions in the V6 Turbo cup. Larrauri took the title in 1985 and his team mate Sigala would do so in the next three seasons. Both are excellent drivers but their cars were also prepared very well. Together they also were successful in endurance racing for the team of Walter Brun. The model shows Larrauri with the #1. I took the pictures below at the Norisring in 1985; Sigala in #3 and Larrauri in the #4 car. My guess is that the model might be from 1986, when Larrauri was the reigning champion and allowed to wear the #1 …

1989 Daytona 24h, Porsche 962C
MOMO owner Gianpiero Moretti drove this former Brun Porsche in Daytona 1989, now operated by Gebhardt Sport. Mauro Baldi crashed hard when he went straight-on in the International horse shoe corner and completely destroyed the BM001 chassis (see pictures). A leak in the brake fluid system caused the crash, Baldi was lucky to escape with only a broken ankle and some bruises.

1990 Daytona 24h, Porsche 962C
Gianpiero Moretti and his MOMO crew were of course again present at Daytona this year. This MOMO car was the same chassis that was destroyed in last year’s race. Gebhardt completely rebuilt the original Thompson chassis and renamed it in 001GS (Gebhardt Sport). However it was a car built to group C specs, it was adapted and entered in IMSA GTP. Unfortunately another crash ended its race after 186 laps. Derek Bell had a tire blow up at 300 km/h, the car landed on its roof and skid over the track.

However the heydays of the Porsche 962 have gone, no less than 19 appeared at the start this year, many with different body styles. This was the Gebhardt rebuilt car that crashed again at Daytona and again was rebuilt. Originally a Group C car but with 38mm restrictors and the Bosch 1.4 Motronic motor management, it was adapted to IMSA rules and started in GTP. GTP had been Mazda territory for the last few years, and that would remain so this year because the gearbox of the MOMO Porsche failed.

Dutchman Jaap van Lagen is blistering fast. Unfortunately Jaap doesn’t always bring a good sponsor deal with him, he has trouble finding a good seat for a longer period. That makes him a perfect mercenary who drove for Lada in WTCC and Black Falcon at Nürburgring many times. In 2015 he surprised everybody by winning the Porsche Supercup race at Monaco in a one-off for Fach Auto. Later in that season he drove in Momo colors at Monza and for Land Motorsport at Spa-Francorchamps.
