Advan is a brand from Yokohama for the sporty tires. The distinctive red and black can be found on cars in the Japanese touring car, GT and sportscar series, but also on some Japanese entries during the Le Mans 24-hour race.

1983 Fuji 1000 km, Porsche 956K. At the world championship race at Fuji, no less than 9 Porsches 956 competed. The Rothmans cars took double victory, this car finishes 6th. Takahashi would win the Japanese Championship no less than 4 times in the familiar colors of sponsor Advan.

1987 Fuji 500 km, Porsche 962C. The Japanese Sports Prototype Championship was very popular in the second half of the 80’s. Porsches battled with Toyota’s and many European topdrivers were present. This Advan 962 won the 500km of Fuji and the drivers won the JSPC title in 1987.

1987 Japanese Touring Car Championship, Nissan Skyline. The Japanese GT Championship (JGTC) is very well known. But that was launched in 1993, in the years before the Japanese Touring Car Championship showed some great racing. This Nissan Skyline RS DR30 made use of a 4-cylinder turbo engine and rear wheel drive.

1994 Japanese GT Championship Mine, Ferrari F40 GT. 1994 Was the second year of the Japanese GT Championship. The grid was a miraculous mix of exotic cars: Lots of Nissan Skylines, but also Porsche GT2 and a former group C 962, Toyota Supra and a Ferrari F40. The former Jolly Club F40 was entered by Team Taisan and won the final race of the season at Mine. In that race, Team Taisan even entered this second F40 in the well known black and red Yokohama livery.

1994 Japanese GT Championship Fuji 250, Porsche 962 GT. In 1994, Le Mans was won by a GT1 based on a groep C Porsche. In Japan the same trick was performed. Team Taisan adapted a 962 to fit the JGTC rules. It won the third round of the championship, the 250km race at Fuji.

1994 Japanese GT Championship Sugo, Porsche 911 RSR turbo. 1994 Was the second year of the Japanese GT Championship. The grid was a mix of many different cars such as many Nissan Skyline, Toyota Supra, Porsche GT2, a downtuned 962, Ferrari F40 and even a Lamborghini Countach! This long tail Porsche RSR Turbo was entered by Team Kunimitsu and won the race at Sugo despite a spin in the closing laps.

1996 Japanese GT Championship, Honda NSX. The Japanese GT Championship (JGTC) was very popular in 1996. This Honda NSX, the very same car which won its class at Le Mans in 1995, finished only 26th in the championship. JGTC cars were advancing far further than the quite basic GT2 cars.

1997 / 1998 Japanese GT Championship, Chrysler Viper GTS/R. Dodge Vipers were not only used at Le Mans and in the FIA GT Series, it also found its way to Japan. Team Taisan Advan used a Porsche GT2 in the first part of the 1997 season before they switched to this mighty Viper. Its best result was 8th in the season final at Sugo. For the 1998 season, Tsuchiya was replaced by Tajima which brought no success. Only in the last race of the championship, when Anthony Reid replaced Tajima, the team scored its only point of the season.

2005 Le Mans 24h, Courage C60h – Judd. Courage Competition entered a C60h themselves, but still with the 4.0-liter Judd engine. It ran in Yokohama Advan colors and used the Japanese tires. It was not as fast as the Pescarolo squad but still qualified 6th, unfortunately it crashed early in the race. Another Courage Competition entry, in a different livery but with similar specs finished 8th.

Last years car was a hybrid between the old C60 LMP 900 and the new P1 regulations, The new P1 LC70 prototype was powered by a Mugen (Honda) V8 engine and was surprisingly quick in qualifying, but only managed 35 laps in the race. The #12 entry didn’t make it to the finish either.
