In this collection I combined many models that could be found also in other exiting collections, but not in this combination. And of course some nice new ones are added. All are BMW Touring / GT with powerful 6-cylinder of V8 engines, often wearing the M-symbol and/or a Z-body. Many are BMW supported but also private entries.

BMW M3 GTR E36 – straight-6
1993 ADAC GT, BMW M3 GTR (E36)
The first generation BMW M3 GTR goes back to 1993: In the new German GT Championship, this factory supported Warthofer BMW M3 GTR was favorite and former DTM and motorbike champion Johnny Cecotto made the predictions come true. He became the first German GT Champion by winning 6 out off 8 races. The two races that weren’t Cecotto’s, were won by Armin Hahne (Honda NSX) and Bruno Eichmann (Porsche Carrera RSR 3.8). Fellow BMW driver Kris Nissen came closest in the championship.

The ADAC GT was kind of alternative for the DTM Championship that just went bankrupt. Johnny Cecotto became the first German GT Champion by winning 6 from 8 races. His nearest competitor was Kris Nissen in this bright colored Isert BMW who finished second five times.

1995 Austrian Touring Car Championship, BMW M3 GTR (E36)
Dieter Quester has been racing on a high level for many years. In 1995 he drove this BMW M3 GTR in the national championship. Without much success, the title was won by Claudia Hürtgen in a Ford Escort Cosworth RS.

In 1996 Quester drove the IMSA Championship with this M3 GTR. Unfortunately, the team retired in the 24-hour race at Daytona. The sister car with #06 finished 3rd in GTS. Pete Halsmer drove some IMSA GT races with the #07 and won 3 times.

BMW M3 GTR E46 – V8
2003 Nürburgring 24h, BMW M3 GTR (E46)
Years later BMW built a new M3 GTR, this time with a V8 engine and raced it in the GT3 class of the American Le Mans Series. Porsche protested it was not a regular GT3 and BMW left the series. BMW then used the Schnitzer prepared GTR in some non-championships such as 24 hours of Spa-Francorchamps and Nürburgring.

BMW M3 GTR E92 – V8
2010 Le Mans 24h, BMW M3 GT2 (E92)
BMW officially returned to GT racing in 2010 and divided the tasks over two team: In USA, the Rahal-Letterman team won the GT2 category in the American Le Mans Series. At Le Mans, the Schnitzer prepared BMW’s were lacking of top speed compared to the competition. The art car designed by Jeff Koons retired, sadly I haven’t managed to lay my hands on a model. The #78 BMW finished 6th in GT2.

The lack of top speed at Le Mans is no issue at the twisty Nürburgring. The BMW Schnitzer team took victory in the 24 hours race at the Nürburgring. It was a bit of a lucky victory, because for a long time it looked as if the new hybrid Porsche would win the race.

Belgian VDS Racing uses one of the nimble BMW Z4 GT3s in the Blancpain Endurance Series. They caught pole-position for the 24-hour race at Spa-Francorchamps, but have to retire. Later on, the car would win the 4th and 5th rounds of the championship.

The GT3 racing version is another story: It’s equipped with a BMW Motorsport V8 engine from the M3 and very competitive. It’s now also being used in the Japanese Super GT 300 series where GT3 cars are being accepted. TheGoodsmile Racing car wins 4 races and the championship.

German Vita4One Racing started as Vitaphone Racing. It had enormous succes with the Maserati in GT1 in the past, winning several titles and also the Spa 24h race. Sponsor Vitaphone has gone, but the colour scheme remained. In 2011 the team took the Blancpain title with a Ferrari 458 and for 2012 they entered two BMW Z4 GT3. This car took pole-position and finished 3rd.

BMW entered four factory supported cars, two from Marc VDS and two byTeam Schubert. The two Schubert cars collided when Alzen in the white #19 came across a corner and found the black #20 driving slowly because of a “code 60”. Alzen also hit the guard rail quite hard and however he managed to reach the pits and repairs were made, the team had to retire.

Alessandro Zanardi makes another return to the race track. This time in a ROAL Motorsport prepared BMW Z4 GT3. The VROOOAAW is dedicated to Michel Vaillant, another motorsport hero that never quits. Zanardi drove together with ex F1 driver Timo Glock and DTM champion Bruno Spengler and finished 25th overall.

2012 DTM Championship, BMW M3 DTM (F30). BMW returned to DTM 20 years after their last win (Roberto Ravaglia, Schnitzer BMW M3 E30). They entered 3 teams with 6 cars and some very quick drivers such as Martin Tomczyk and Bruno Spengler. Spengler took the title after a great fight with his former Mercedes team mate Paffett. BMW took the makes title and Schnitzer the teams trophy. Team RMG is a new name in motorsport but exists of experienced people, they were competitive right from the start of the season.

Last year, Bruno Spengler took the title after a great fight with his former Mercedes team mate Gary Paffett. Spengler drove the #1 car in 2013, he won the race at Red Bull RIng and finished third in the championship. Mike Rockenfeller in an Audi A5 took the title in 2013.

Augusto Farfus raced the 2017 DTM season in the RMG BMW Team, one of the two works-supported BMW teams, the other being RBM. BMW drivers scored a couple of wins but not Farfus who finished a disappointing 16th in the championship this year. René Rast took the title in his Audi.

The BMW M6 GT3 is a really large car with a powerful V8 twin turbo engine. In any other era it would have failed but in GT3 it gets compensated for its overweight thanks to the ‘balance of performance’. The #98 didn’t finish – I bought the wrong model – it’s ROWE teammates #99 win the Spa 24-hour race.

Since many years, BMW often uses different teams for their motorsport activities in the USA and Europe. And most of the time, new cars are introduced in the USA first. This was also the case were Rahal-Letterman already raced the BMW M8 GTE, before MTEK got to race these oversized cars in the WEC and Le Mans.

2020 Intercontinental GT Challenge – Spa-Francorchamps 24h, BMW M6 GT3 (F13)
Boutsen Ginion entered a real BMW art car in this year’s 24-hour race at Spa-Francorchamps. The livery was designed by American artist Peter Halley. BMW factory driver Jens Klingmann shared the wheel with three amateur drivers. The beautiful car finished a credible 5th in the PRO-AM category.

Since a few years Motorsport Competence Group adapted the name ROWE Racing after their sponsor, the mineral oil brand. ROWE is active in the German endurance racing and also never skips the 24-hour race at Spa-Francorchamps. They have raced Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, the Porsche 911 GT3 R and are a works supported team from BMW now. They won the 24-hours of Spa-Francorchamps in 2024 and the Nürburgring 24h in 2025 with the new BMW M4 GT3 which is as big as the M6 GT3 …

2024 Le Mans 24h, BMW M4 GT3 evo (G92)
When Audi announced they would stop support of GT3 customer teams, WRT switched to BMW. They took their crown jewel with them; Valentino Rossi. The Italian 9-time world champion on motorbike is a very good GT driver, but also brings a lot of goodwill, publicity and fan base with him. Unfortunately Rossi’s first Le Mans ended prematurely because of damage after a crash from Al Harthy. His team mates in the #31 did better by securing the second place in GT3 LM.

2025 Bathurst 12h, BMW M4 GT3 evo (G92)
The Bathurst 12-hour race was round 1 of the Intercontinental GT Challenge. This attracted some European top teams and drivers to the famous race down under. Amongst these the two BMW M4 GT3 evo from Team WRT, now BMW’s preferred partner. The battle was intense, no less than 6 cars finished in the same lap, the first three within 12 seconds. The winning (Augusto Farfus – Sheldon Van der Linde – Kelvin Van der Linde) BMW was mainly black and the #46 that came in second place had a quite classic BMW Motorsport livery.
