#128 Porsche 934

Only 2 years after the debut of a turbocharged 911 RSR on the racetracks, the 911 turbo (or 930) was taken in production and thus homologated for Group 4 (934) and Group 5 (935) racing. The 934 was successful both in sprint races such as the European GT Championship and endurance. Its main competitor was the BMW M1, but that was less reliable. Here I present the Porsche 934’s that I have in my collection, the 935’s will follow later.
The Porsche 934 was based on a production car and used the flat-6 with a single turbo charger and was entered in group 4, B and IMSA GTO. The Porsche 935 also started as an improved production car, but the group 5 and IMSA GTX allowed many more changes so these developed into actual space frame prototypes. 934’s could also be entered in group 5 and used wider tires and bigger rear wings.

1976 Nürburgring 300 km, Porsche 934
Only 2 years after the debut of a turbocharged Porsche 911 on the racetracks, the car was available for road use and homologated for Group 4 and 5 racing. Not an easy car to drive, the street car was nicknamed ‘widow maker’, but it soon took over GT racing as it was so much more powerful than the normally aspirated Carrera RSR. The first European GT race was combined with the first World championship race in April at a wet and foggy Nürburgring. The Joest Prototype Porsche won, Hezemans finished second in the Tebernum / Gelo Porsche 934.

The turbo version of the Porsche 911 dominated the German GT Championship (DRM) in 1976. Helmut Kelleners dominated the opening race of the season at the Nürburgring in his Max Moritz car in Jägermeister livery. His team mate Reinhard Stenzel finished 2nd, 23 seconds behind. The pictures show the Jägermeister cars at the Norisring, another DRM event.

1977 Nürburgring 300km DRM, Porsche 934/5
In 1977 the new group 5 regulations were adapted by the world championship for makes and also the DRM. The teams in Division I (> 2 liter) switched to the Porsche 935. All of them? No, privateer Edgar Dören still raced a 934, but this one was adapted to the group 5 rules. The engine was still the same, but a huge rear spoiler and wider wheel arches were quite different from last year’s 934. He finished 5th in the 300 km race at the Nürburgring.

1976 Le Mans 24h, Porsche 934
Only 2 years after the debut of a turbocharged 911 prototype on the racetracks, the car was available for road use and homologated for Group 4 and 5 racing. This 934 finished 4th in class in this year’s Le Mans. French lady driver Marie-Claude Beaumont wasn’t even the fastest lady, Anne Charlotte Verney finished even higher in a group 5 Porsche 934.

This Kremer Porsche 934 won its class in Le Mans in 1977, finishing 7th overall, a massive 17 laps ahead of the next car which was an old Carrera RSR. A number of Porsche 934s had issues with gearbox or head gaskets and retired but this one ran trouble free. Bob Wollek was one of the drivers.

1976 Le Mans 24h, Porsche 934
This French J.M.S. Racing Team entry had an X-ray livery. Not entirely original as the Kremer Porsche had a similar concept. The team also ran a Porsche 935 in the same livery. The 935 did exceptionally well finishing 3rd, but the 934 came home in 19th place, but still reached the GT podium.

The turbocharged Porsche 934 was much faster than the old RSR. It also was very reliable as proved by this Swiss car that finished 4th overall. The entire race was plagued by heavy rains, therefore the favorite prototypes couldn’t use their potential speed advantage. GT cars filled the top 4 spots, three Porsche 935s followed by this 934 that won its category.

Fast lady Anny-Charlotte Verney entered a Porsche 934 that she drove herself. The very experienced René Metge and Formula 3 driver Patrick Bardinon joined her. In theory it was the favorite for the GT win, but it wouldn’t. The Lubrifilm car was almost 6 seconds faster in qualifying and stayed out of trouble. The Lois sponsored Porsche finished 19th overall and still 3rd in GT.

1981 Le Mans 24h, Porsche 934
The ACO has always been interested in fuel consumption and the development of alternative fuel engines. Cars that ran on alternative fuel – of which the consumption is often higher – were allowed shorter intervals between tank stops. Thierry Perrier was the first to try and entered a Porsche 911 SC that ran on alcohol in the 1980 race, this year he is back with a turbocharged 934 on alcohol. The team finishes 17th and win the GT category because they’re the only car that crossed the line, the BMW M1’s had already retired long before that.

Brumos won the 1973 and 1975 Daytona 24-hour race in a 911 Carrera. The 1977 race was again won by a normally aspirated Carrera RSR 3.0 and again also by Hurley Haywood, but this time not in a Brumos car. The Brumos Porsche 934 with turbo engine finished only 10th.

  • The model is produced in two different versions with the same number; the left one has the ‘ducktail’ rear spoiler from the 1973 RSR, which is wrong. The right one with the bigger rear wing is correct.

1983 Sebring 12h, Porsche 934
A record 84 cars started the Sebring 12 hour race in 1983. Among which a number of new prototypes such as Lola T600, March 83G and Jaguar XJR and some very fast space-frame Porsche 935’s. But a lot of them retired and in the end this GTO porsche 934 won the race ahead of the Bob Akin Porsche 935. This 930 009 0030 chassis strikes again, but in the previous races it was a 935 or 935 K3 …
