Hans Joachim Stuck, nick name “Strietzel” is the son of Hans Stuck Sr, a famous racer in the 1930’s. His father taught him to drive on the Nürburgring as a young boy. In 1969, he started his first ever motor race at the Nordschleife and he already won the 24-hour race at age 19. He mainly raced in BMW, Porsche and Audi with a short excursion as factory driver for Ford in 1972. Between 1974 and 1979. Hans raced in Formula 1 for March, ATS and Brabham. With Porsche he won the Le Mans 24h three times in 1986, 1987 and 1994. Stuck is famous for his practical jokes and skills on a wet track.
In April 2012, Stuck was elected President of the German Motorsport Association.

BMW didn’t compete in all races in 1974, so Ford took the European title in their last year with the Capri. BMW however, did compete in some world championship races such as the 1000 km at the Nürburging. Not in the familiar white, but in a dark blue livery. The T on the car means that it competed in the Touring category. Ickx and Stuck had a nice battle with arch enemy Ford (see pic), but retired with a broken gearbox.

At the end of the 1974 season, Ford retired from Motorsport and archrival BMW went to the USA. Only for the most prestigious race in the 1975 DRM Championship at the Norisring , the old rivals met again. Peterson drove the BMW in the non championship Norisring Trophy or “money race” and Stuck piloted it in the DRM race. Both times the BMW retired with brake problems. That DRM race was won by Jochen Mass in the old factory Capri. The BMW missed some striping on the hood on Sunday, remainders of the small crash that Stuck had in qualifying.

1980 DRM Norisring, BMW 320 turbo
During the 1979 DRM season, Schnitzer built a very extreme 320 turbo with much improved aerodynamics and low point of gravity. They changed it slightly when Hans Joachim Stuck piloted the car in 1980. His aim was to beat the Zakspeed Capri’s and he did. But he finished second in the championship behind Hans Heyer, the man that had developed the Capri and now drove an ex-works Lancia Beta Montecarlo. This BMW model is from the Norisring where Stuck finished second.

In order to score points for the championship, last year’s division II 320 turbo was put in the game. In the end it didn’t bring anything, because Stuck retired.

The M1 was also converted to Group 5 specs by several chassis builders, but still using the normally aspirated engine of the Procar, it was no match for the more powerful Porsches 935. Reliability was not the strongest point, all but one M1’s retired with problems, this one after it was damaged. It was the only M1 that was entered in IMSA GTX, all other were Group 5. 1981 DRM Championship Bergischer Löwe Zolder – BMW M1 Turbo
The BMW M1 is famous from the Procar Championship. Many M1 were also converted to Group 5 and IMSA GTX specs often based on the Procar version. Several chassis builders (such as March, Sauber, Martini) built special wide body space frame cars but these were still using the normally aspirated engine of the Procar. Schnitzer did something else; they built a car for the German DRM Championship and provided it with a turbo engine. This delivered up to 850 hp in racing trim and even 1000 hp in qualifying. It was quick but the immense power had some negative effects on the drivability and reliability. Hans J. Stuck drove it in this livery in the first few races of the 1981 season. In the season opener at Zolder, the turbo collapsed after only 2 laps.

Porsche GT
1992 Nürburgring 24h, Porsche 911 Carrera RS
It happens often that the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring doesn’t last the full 24-hours. Fog, snow and rain can be treacherous at the long and twisty circuit in the Eiffel forest. 1992 was such a year, the heavy rain made it almost impossible to race. One of the four star drivers of this near standard cup Porsche was rally-ace Walter Röhrl. At a certain moment in the pouring rain he was said to be a minute per lap faster than the leading DTM BMWs M3 evo. The race was red-flagged after 76 laps and never restarted, it was the shortest Nürburgring 24h until 2021. The factory supported DTM M3s were in a class of their own, this Porsche finished 3rd, then came a DTM Opel Omega 3000 and the next 10 cars in the end result were all Porsche 911 Carrera RS. The sister car #4 (see picture) finished in 43rd place, 11 laps behind.
