The new developed Porsche 911 GT1 competed not only in Le Mans but also the FIA GT Championship, the successor of the BPR Series. At the first round of the 1997 championship at Hockenheim, this works car finished 4th in front of 5 other 911 Gt1’s but behind 3 McLarens. The version with the facelift and other livery appeared only after round 3.

Non-works cars have chassis numbers that start with 1, just as the 956 and 962. One of these was the car from Roock Racing that finished second in the Helsinki FIA-GT race behind a works McLaren-BMW F1 GTR.

1997 FIA GT round 11 Laguna Seca, Porsche 911 GT1
The 1997 championship battle was between McLaren and Mercedes with Porsche being an outsider. This G-Force / Strandell car was the former JB Racing car. It finished 12th at Laguna Seca and won the demo-race at Zhuhai in China end of season. In the following years the car would be entered in the British GT Championship.

Italian Scuderia BMS was one of the privateers that had a 1996 Porsche 911 GT1. Unlike some other 911’s, this had speed as well as reliability. It started tenth and finished eight.

The privateer teams such as Konrad had GT1’s in 1996 specifications. These were not as fast as the improved McLarens and new Mercedes and also not as reliable. Six from eight entered Porsches retired, this one crashed out of the race.

And another Porsche 911 GT1 was this one from Schübel Engineering. It wasn’t the fastest one, qualifying only 20th, but in the end it was 5th and first of the 911 GT1’s. A great result for the German team.

The 1998 version of the 911 GT1 was more than just an evolution version. It was a brand new car with a carbon fibre monocoque and body which had nothing in common with a street car. However … for homologation purpose, 1 street version has been built.

Zakspeed entered two 1998 GT1 Porsche for the FIA Championship and Le Mans. In the FIA they performed quite well with some 3rd and 4th places, such as the #5 at Oschersleben and the #6 car at Silverstone. But both cars failed to qualify for the Le Mans 24-hour race.

After the GT1 class was internationally abandoned, most cars disappeared to the USA and British Championships. This G-Force ran ’96 GT1 finished most of the time just outside the podium. It also had a few DNS and DNF and therefor ended only 12th in the championship.

IMSA & Daytona 24h

1997 IMSA GT Championship, Porsche 911 GT1
Jochen Rohr raced a Porsche GT2 but then bought this ex-Roock GT1. He dominated the second half of the IMSA GT season with his drivers Pilgrim and McNish. Pilgrim became drivers champion and Rohr won the teams title.

Another former works car (chassis numbers that start wit 0) was bought by Champion Racing.  It ran in the top 5 for a while but retired with overheating, it got classified finished 19th after all. Team Champion cars always are very nicely painted and light up in the dark.

Gunnar Racing wanted to honor the Florida Mako fighter squadron. They pulled the car after one stint because the team didn’t have a sponsor and it was just going to wear the car out. If you think that the car shows some resemblance with the 2024 “Rexy” …. no coincidence, Gunnar was involved in that car too.
