The Dauer 962 LM GT had won Le Mans, but that was considered a loop hole in the rule book. GT1 was supposed to be a category for exotic GT’s such as Jaguar XJ 220, Ferrari F40, McLaren F1 and Porsche 911 turbo. But soon, manufacturers started using the loop hole again by developing homologation specials, the Porsche GT1 was one of the first.
Le Mans 1996
1996 Le Mans 24h, Porsche 911 GT1. The 1996 Porsche GT1 looks like a Porsche 993, but is a pure prototype from which 25 were built for homologation. The engine came directly from the famous Group C Porsche 962, and the driver line-up was great. So it was favorite to beat the McLarens, but lost Le Mans to a WSC Prototype from Porsche-customer Joest.

Le Mans 1997
1997 Le Mans 24h, Porsche 911 GT1 evo. The Porsche GT1 is a pure prototype from which 25 are built for homologation. This was the evo version, used by the factory in 1997. The development of the 911 GT1 had been on a strict budget, the factory still used the steel monocoque where most competitors switched to carbon fibre. The improved longtail McLarens beat the Porsches all season in BPR and also at Le Mans. Fortunately for Porsche, they can always relay on Joest who took the overall victory with his Porsche powered WSC prototype.

Gunnar G-99
Gunnar Racing built a fixture that enabled them to produce a copy of the Porsche 911 GT1 with one great exception: It had no roof! The Sportscar, built in 1999 was named G-99S and was supposed to run in the 2000 ALMS but because of a rule change, it never did.

In 2003, Gunnar decided to add a roof. It now was almost a copy of a Porsche 911 GT1 evo except for the front end and the engine which was a normally aspirated 3.6 liter flat-6 from a GT3 RS which was much cheaper to run and allowed a smaller air-intake in the roof because there were no intercoolers. The G-99 (now without S) would be used in the 2003 Grand-Am Series in many different liveries.
2003 Daytona 24h, Gunnar G-99 – Porsche. The Swap Shop sponsored G-99 ran in cooperation with Duncan Dayton’s Highcroft Racing. it qualified 28th but retired early in the race because it only ever seemed to run on 5 cylinders.
