Already in 1930, the first female driver competed in Le Mans, winning her class. Since then lady drivers appear at Le Mans on a regular basis. The most starts are made by Anne-Charlotte Verney (10 times), but also Rahel Frey (8) and Vanina Ickx (7) did well. A few times we even saw all-female line-ups. Also in other competitions female drivers are active, Michele Mouton won at Le Mans as well as in the WRC and Jutta Kleinschmidt took an overall victory in the grueling Dakar rally. This collection is to honor these girls who compete in a men dominated world.
There must be many more Racing Ladies models, I will try to ad more in time.

The 1971 Spa 24-hour race was expected to be a battle between the BMW 2800 CS, Opel Comodore GSE and Ford Capri 2600 RS. BMW tune Alpina entered 3 cars in division 3, but it wasn’t their year. One car didn’t start at all after a crash in qualifying, the Niki Lauda BMW suffered from a broken transmission and this team with the fast ladies Liane Engeman and Christine Beckers retired with a broken engine. In the end Ford won ahead of the surprising Mercedes. The BMW honors were saved by two Group 1 cars that finished 6th and 7th.

1982 Le Mans 24h, Grid S1
The Grid S1 was a distinctive design with its formula car nose cone poking out the main body, probably inspired by the Lola T600 that G.R.I.D. Racing used in 1981. It was designed by former Lotus employee Geoff Aldridge, but lack of funds lead to a much too heavy, underpowered car. The remarkable design generated so much drag that the topspeed was only 300 km/h. That didn’t mind as the engine seized after lap 7. The only positive was the support of the Hawaiian Tropic girls!
G.R.I.D. Racing #37: Emilio de Villota (ES) / Alain de Cadenet (GB) / Desiree Wilson (SA)

1983 Le Mans 24h, Rondeau M379C
Rondeau developed a new group C car, the M482. Three cars were entered by Ford France but all retired with engine problems. Rondeau also took this old group 6 M379 to Le Mans, it was adapted to the group C rules by adding weight among others. It was no match for the real group C cars and only qualified 32nd despite the presence of Vic Elford who returned to Le Mans after 9 years. It also retired with a broken Cosworth engine.

1991 Le Mans 24h, Spice SE90C
In 1976 we saw already a two driver female team in the Alpine, the first all-female line-up in a three driver team was this entry. It almost went wrong before it began. Tomiko Yoshikawa didn’t have the right license and former French F3 champion Cathy Muller replaced her in the last moment. Then, Desiree Wilson crashed the #017 chassis during practice on a wet track beyond repair. Also in the paddock was the GP Motorsport Spice that was brought for spare parts. A deal was made and the GP Motorsport #008 chassis switched owner and received the Cosworth DFZ and pink bodywork and became the new Euro Racing / AO entry. In the race, another crash caused the team to retire.

1995 Le Mans 24h, SARD MC8-R Toyota
Toyota’s first attempt in GT1 was with this SARD MC8-R. Sigma Advanced Research Development (SARD) built a Lexus V8 turbo engine in a small Toyota MR2. Of course they had to redesign the entire car, enlarging its wheel base by 40 cm and many other things. It became a new car with a new name and homologation. The clutch could not handle the power of the V8 and the car retired after only 14 laps. Tomiko Yoshikawa did have the right license this year and was the only female driver on this entry.

1981 Rally San Remo, Audi Quattro
In 1980 Audi introduced the Quattro to the rally world. Based on the Audi 80/90 and equipped with permanent All Wheel Drive, it was a bit too long and heavy at first. It suffered from understeer, especially on tarmac which it compensated with plenty of power from the straight-5 turbo engine. But on gravel and snow, the Quattro had much more grip than its conventional two-wheel drive competitors. Michele Mouton and Fabrizia Pons were the first ladies to win a rally that counted for the World Rally Championship. They would take 3 more WRC wins in 1982. Mouton quit after the group B cars were banned, Pons later became co-pilot for Jutta Kleinschmidt in the Dakar rally.

Jutta drove together with fellow German Andreas Schulz in a Mitsubishi after she competed in the Schlesser Buggy in 1997 and 1998. Jean-Louis Schlesser finished third in his Buggy after he was penalized for an hour earlier in the rally. He would have won without this. Between 1988 and 1992 Jutta started in the bike categorie in Dakar. She has also competed in the Nürburgring 24h where she scored a class win and 7th overall in 1999.

2003 Marseille – Sharm el Sheikh, VW Tarek
In 1980, Volkwagen won the second Dakar with the factory entered Iltis. In 2003 the brand returned to Dakar with this Tarek buggy. It had the looks of the W12 concept car, but was equiped with a 1.9 liter TDI turbodiesel engine with 220 hp and had rear wheel drive only. This was compensated by a low weight and great torque. VW entered 5 cars among which this with Kleinschmidt and Pons who won the race in 2001 with Mitsubishi. From 2004 VW would use the 4WD Touareg.
