Lola was founded in 1958 by Eric Broadley and have produced many sports cars and formula racing cars. Many wins and championships were achieved in F3000 and Indy Cars. After the unsuccessful attempt to join Formula 1 again, Martin Birrane took over the company in 1997 and launched a new generation sport cars with (part) carbon fiber chassis’ in 1998. Successes were achieved especially in the P675 / LMP2 categories, but in 2012 the company went broke. Multimatic took over some assets and kept a few cars running in IMSA until 2016.
Lola B98/10
1999 Le Mans 24h, Lola B98/10 – Judd. The B98/10 was the first from a generation of new Lola’s. After Birrane took over, all new Lola types started with a B. This one was equipped with the Judd V10 engine and entered by French DAMS team. It retired with a broken engine, probably because the cooling was the weakest point of the beautiful Lola. It drew almost all cooling air from underneath the car and that wasn’t very effective at high track temperatures …

1999 Le Mans 24h, Lola B98/10 – Ford. Dutchman Jan Lammers started Racing for Holland and invited countrymen Peter Kox and Tom Coronel to join him. He hired this Lola and the services of Konrad Racing, which explains the German flag on the side of the Lola (Konrad is Austrian, but his team is situated in Germany). Unfortunately the gearbox broke down after 213 laps and the car had to retire.

1999 Le Mans 24h, Lola B98/10 – Ford. Kremer Racing used to race Porsches at Le Mans. In the previous years they raced the Porsche-engined K8 but that got outdated. 2002 Le Mans 24h, Lola B98/10 – Judd. This old Lola B98/10 is used in the making of the Michel Vaillant movie. To do so it had to compete in the 2002 Le Mans race as a “Vaillante-Peugeot” fighting its arch enemy “Leader” which is actually a Panoz. Both cars were operated by the DAMS team. The Vaillante may have won the race in the movie, but in the actual race it wasn’t classified because it didn’t cover enough distance.

Lola B2K
The successor of the B98/10 was the Lola B2K/10 which had a raised nose and improved cooling and aerodynamics. Again it was raced with various different engines
2000 Le Mans 24h, Lola B2K/10 – Ford. Just as in last year, the Racing for Holland team was run by Franz Konrad. This year they used the new and aerodynamicaly improved Lola B2K/10. Tom Coronel lost a wheel, he stopped the car, got out and went to collect it. He walked away more than 30 meters from the car. This was judged as abandoning the car, Tom was not allowed to continue and the team got disqualified.

Lola EX257
In 2001 Lola launched a whole new car which was named EX257 but internally was coded B01/60. A light aerodynamic car with great downforce and equipped with an AER developed 4-cylinder turbo it became the car to beat in LMP 675.
2001 Le Mans 24h, Lola EX257 – AER. De MG Lola’s are surprisingly quick. Their speed sometimes matches that of the 900 kg prototypes, especially during the first few hours when the weather was really bad. The reliability of the AER turbo engine is the weakest point of the beautiful Lola.

2002 Le Mans 24h, Lola EX257 – AER. Especially in the USA some teams used the Lola’s. The light and nimble car did very well at short and twisty tracks, it managed to get pole position and even an overall victory. The Highcroft / NightHawk entered car raced at Le Mans, but it was much slower than the works-supported Chamberlain Lola’s. The Avon tires might have been one of the reasons, as well as the level of the drivers.

Fun fact: the chassis numbers all start with HU, which means they had been built in the Lola factory in Huntingdon (UK). Older cars have chassis numbers with SL (Slough) in it.
2009 Le Mans 24h, Aston Martin DBR 1-2. After the success of last year’s Charouz Lola, Aston Martin entered LMP1 with a complete factory team. However the car was somewhat different from the 2008 version, the ACO refused to homologate it as an Aston Martin, so it officially remained a Lola. They had no chance against the diesels from Peugeot and Audi, but the best AM finished 4th, best of the rest. The car with the fastest line up (Verstappen, Davidson and Turner) only finished ninth. They had to drive an updated 2008 chassis because Verstappen destroyed the 2009 one during testing. The scalemodel of the #009 is the slightly different presentation version.
