1977 Spa-Francorchamps 24h – BMW 3.0i US. The 1977 24-hour race of Spa-Francorchamps was a non-championship event for group 1 cars. The battle went on between Ford Capri 3.0S, Vauxhall Firenza, Alfetta GTV and BMW. Some teams entered the BMW 530i US, a version with 3-liter engine that was not available in Europe at that moment. It turned out to be a success, the team of Joosen and rally driver Andruet won, other BMWs finished 5th and 7th.

1979 Spa-Francorchamps 24h, BMW 530i. 1979 Was the first year of the shortened Spa-Francorchamps track, basically the same that is still in use. The extreme fast Masta straight and ultra fast and dangerous Masta kink belong to the past now, that didn’t mean that there were no crashes anymore. The biggest shunt was that from Jean-Pierre Beltoise who parked his car on top of the guard rail before it burst into flames. Luckily no one was hurt.

1982 Spa-Francorchamps 24h, BMW 528i. In 1982 BMW used the 4-door saloon 528i in the European Touring Car Championship. Not really a racing car at first sight, but neither was the competition: Ford Capri 3.0S, Camaro, Opel Monza 3.0E, Mazda RX-7 and Alfetta GTV. TWR got the Jaguar XJS homologated, and it was much faster than the BMW’s but not as reliable. BMW 528i’s took first 6 places, now that is reliability. The Bastos BMW won the race. This one with local hero Tassin, F1 driver Jarier and actor Trintignant finished 2nd.

1982 European Touring Car Championship, BMW 528i. Umberto Grano and Helmut Kelleners were the last group 2 European touring car champions with their mighty BMW 635 CSi. In 1981 the grid was already half filled with group A touring cars which would be the new standard. In 1982 the ETCC was only to be contended with such group A cars. The old champions became the new champions; Grano and Kelleners won the first 5 races of the season and took the title. In the second half of the season the new TWR Jaguar was often faster.

1981 European Touring Car Championship, BMW 635 CSi. The European Touring Car Championship had its best years behind, more and more standard group 1 cars were called on to fill the small grids. The old BMW CSL that ruled the championship for so many years was not homologated anymore and not allowed to start. Umberto Grano ordered a newer BMW 635 CSi to group 2 specifications from Eggenberger. He won several races with it and the championship together with Helmut Kelleners. It would be the very last year of group 2. In 1983 the 635 CSi would receive a Group A homologation.

1983 Spa-Francorchamps 24h, BMW 635 CSi. The BMW 635 CSi was the most popular car in the European Touring Car Championship. It showed because no less than 16 BMW 635’s arrived at the start of the 24 hour race and also 3 older 528i’s. With these numbers it doesn’t matter if some break down and retire, which was the case. There are always some that make it to the finish. The Bastos BMW of JUMA Racing won by 8 laps over a similar car of Team Schnitzer.

1984 German Production Car Championship Zolder, BMW 635 CSi. Hans J. Stuck drove the ETCC with a BMW works car. In the DTM het did a few races for Brun Motorsport, the team he also raced for in the Sportscar World Championship. At Zolder, in the rain, Hans started second but retired two laps before the finish. He was classified 13th in the end. This was the first race of the German Production Car Championship, that would be renamed in DTM later.

1984 German Production Car Championship, BMW 635 CSi. Group A touring cars became very popular. One of the best championships was the German, with lots of BMW, Volvo and Rover. Harald Grohs (BMW) won most races, but the title went surprisingly to Volker Strycek. Strycek didn’t win a race but was the most consistent, he would became Opel Sport Manager later. The Production Car Championship was renamed in DTM the next year.

1984 Bathurst 1000 km, BMW 635 CSi. Group A touring cars found their way to the greatest touring car race down under, the Bathurst 1000. They were no match for the powerful Holden V8 and tuned Mazda RX7 that were entered in a what they locally call ‘group C’ touring car category. F1 crack Denny Hulme and “Poldi” von Bayern shared this Group A BMW and came home second in class. It was sponsored by JPS. The famous JPS logo is very well known as John Player Special, to my surprise it is used here as short for John Player & Sons. Another JPS BMW drove in group C but retired.
