In my collection , many brands have their own collections of touring cars: BMW has several (#103, #104, #113, #114), Ford Touring (#064) is quite popular Nissan (#66), Audi (#077), Alfa Romeo (#083), and Mercedes (#084 ) share the touring cars with GT or prototypes. Some others show up here and there. This collection is dedicated to the touring cars that deserve some more attention. Fun fact: Tom Walkinshaw’s TWR has a major role in many of these.
Opel
Opel has been part of General Motors for many years. During those years the brand was quite active in all kinds of touring car racing and rallying. Nowadays it’s part of the Stellantis group and only a small brand on the European car market and not visible anymore on the tracks.

1974 Interserie 300 km Nürburgring, Opel Commodore “Jumbo”
It is highly uncommon to adapt a touring car to be a sports car, but it happens: Porsche raced the RSR turbo in prototypes in 1974 and Nissan did something similar in 1983 in the Japanese championship. Peter Hoffmann built a Chevrolet V8 engine in his Opel Commodore and put some very large spoilers on it. He started in the ‘stock’ category of the Interserie race at the Nürburgring in 1974. The Opel Commodore “Jumbo” looks like a group 5 car, but that category was to be introduced in 1976.

1980 Zolder DRM, Opel Kadett GT/E
The Opel Kadett GT/E has been raced in the 2-liter DRM category for some years but never threatened the Ford Escort RS and BMW 2002 Tii. Even with an excellent drivers as Walter Röhrl (seen here on 2 wheels, not his usual style) and Manfred Trint (full opposite lock at the Norisring), the Opels with their 8-valve engines couldn’t match the speed of the 16-valve competitors. Günther Knippschild entered his Kadett for the DRM round in Zolder in the same Castrol livery that Zakspeed used a few years before. I have found only 1 picture and he probably didn’t even start the race.

1984 DPM Nürburgring Supersprint, Chevrolet Camaro Z28
A new touring car championship was launched in Germany in 1984. It was open to group A touring cars and named Deutsche Produktionwagen Meisterschaft, later it would be renamed in DTM: Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft. Especially the first years we saw a very wide variety of makes an models; BMW 323i and 635 CSI, Ford Capri 3.0S and Sierra XR4Ti, Alfetta GTV6, Volvo 240 turbo, Rover Vitesse V8, Opel Manta and Kadett GT/E. An interesting entry was the Chevrolet Camaro Z28 that was driven by Peter John. The big Camaro sounded marvelous with its 5.7 liter V8 engine and John had a spectacular driving style. The heavy car sometimes suffered from brake problems, but on track where that wasn’t the case he was a serious contender. He won the Supersprint at the short Nürburgring.

2023 Le Mans 24h, Chevrolet Camaro ZL1
A NASCAR at Le Mans, it had been done before but was never successful. In 2023, ACO and Hendrick Motorsports used the “Garage 56” loophole to enter a NASCAR Chevrolet Camaro to Le Mans. The car fitted none of the categories at Le Mans, so Hendrick could build the car from a clean sheet without annoying homologation or Balance of Performance rules. It was designed to be considerably faster than the current GTE LM cars. The NASCAR lost about 225 kgs of weight, received dive planes and a large diffuser, head- and tail lights, wider tires and carbon fibre brakes. A very strong line-up with a Formula 1 legend, a NASCAR legend and a Le Mans legend completed of the show. The NASCAR was indeed a few seconds faster on a single lap than the GTE cars, but finished well behind the GTE’s in 39th position.

In 1977 the British wanted to campaign the entire ETCC season with a two car team, but it was a disaster. The big cats were much faster than the old BMW’s but retired almost every race; gearboxes, drive shafts, differentials, everything broke down. Also brakes were a problem, the cars were simply too heavy. A Jaguar reached the finish in only one occasion, 2nd at Nürburgring. At Silverstone the car retired just before the end, but still got classified 4th. Before end of the season British Leyland stopped the project.

1984 Spa-Francorchamps 24h, Jaguar XJS
The collaboration between Jaguar and Tom Walkinshaw Racing (TWR) started in 1982. The Jaguar XJS was surprisingly homologated for group A by the clever TWR team. It’s impossible that 5.000 cars are built in a year’s time with a manual gear box and wheel arches that allow such wide rear tires … Even more surprisingly, in 1984 it beat the BMW’s over 24 hours in very changing weather conditions. Tom Walkinshaw gained Jaguar’s trust and was commissioned to build the group C prototypes afterwards.
TWR #12: Tom Walkinshaw (GB) / Win Percy (GB) / Hans Heyer (D)

Toyota
1977 DRM Championship Zolder, Toyota Celica turbo
In 1977 Schnitzer not only raced their turbo BMWs in division II of the DRM. They also tried to compete with the almighty Porsche 935s in division I. Not with a BMW – which would have been the easiest choice I guess – but with Toyota. In 1977 Harald Ertl tried his luck with the turbo-charged flame spitting Celica GT. It turned out to be a deception, he only won once in a non-championship race at Zolder in the autumn of 1977 (pictured with #68)

1988 Japanese Touring Cars Tsukuba Speedway,Toyota Supra
The All Japanese touring Car Championship saw fierce battles between numerous Nissan Skyline R31s and Ford Sierra Cosworths. Behind those the TOM’s Toyota Supra achieved good results. It didn’t score high in the championship table because the driver line-up wasn’t the same for every race. European stars Geoff Lees and Tiff Needell shared the #36 Toyota in round 4 of the 1988 championship and finished 4th. According to EBBRO this is a 1990 car, but in 1990 the cars were all blue with Fujitsu-Ten advertising.

The next Toyotas all races in the Japanese GT Championship, but before they were transformed in these GT-prototypes the Toyota Trueno, Corolla and Prius were actually touring cars…
1999 Super GT Championship round 4 Mine, Toyota Trueno AE86
This little Toyota AE86 is more known as drift car in the Grand Turismo computer game than because of its great results. The team skipped the first two races and retired twice, the best result came at Mine where they reached 5th in the GT300 category.

2010 Super GT Championship Fuji 400 km,Toyota Corolla Axio
äpr is a Japanese racing team supported by Toyota. In the 2014 Super GT Championship they enter this Toyota Corolla Axio in GT300. However it looks like a normal day Corolla with some Tupperware added to its body, it is a serious racing car. The engine is no longer in the front but now sits behind the driver, nor is it a small 4-cylinder anymore. It won its class in the 400 km race at Fuji.

2014 Suzuka 1000km, Toyota Prius GT300
If you dislike the Corolla, you’ll probably hate this one ;-). Toyota used äpr to give their hybrid car a boost. The Toyota Prius received a 3.4 liter V8 similar to that of a TS040 Le Mans racer from 2013. Of course that didn’t fit under the low front of the Prius, so äpr mounted it in the middle of the car, this is all allowed in GT300 where the horsepower limit has exceeded the original 300 hp some time ago, half of the GT300 cars are GT3 cars. Results weren’t consistent over the season but it did score two second places in GT300.

Mazda
1980 British Saloon Car Championship, Mazda RX-7
The year before its international breakthrough by winning the Spa 24h, Win Percy competed in the British Saloon Car Championship. The little TWR-prepared Mazda fought for overall victory against the very fast 3-liter Ford Capris of Andy Rouse and Gordon Spice and de Rover V8 from Jeff Allam who all battled in category D. And that very competitive field made Percy champion: The little Mazda was entered in category C, the below 2-liter category, which he won every race.

1981 Spa-Francorchamps 24h, Mazda RX-7
The first great success for the rotary Mazda’s. The small Mazda RX-7 was the surprise of 1981. It was already blistering quick in qualifying (2nd behind a Camaro), but managed to keep up the high rhythm all race long. The Tom Walkinshaw prepared Mazda defeated the BMW 530i and Ford Capri that were the favorites. This was also the first 24-hour race that I visited!
