This collection was dedicated to the Bob Akin Coca-Cola Porsche at first but I changed it because Coca Cola sponsored also other teams and drivers. Such as Nissans and a Lola from Japan,BMW, Riley & Scott and it all began with David Piper’s Porsche 917.
David Piper
1969 Kyalami 9h, Porsche 917. The first Porsche 917 was very difficult to drive because of bad aerodynamics and therefore very dangerous because the car would get unstable at high speeds. David Piper was one of the first customers and not afraid and also a very fine driver. He raced this 1969 version in the 9-hour at Kyalami together with Richard Attwood and won. Piper was also the first to introduce not-motorsport-related sponsorship. It that time it was quite common to have stickers on your car from the tires, oil and spark plugs that you used but not from Sandeman of Coca-Cola.

His partner from 1969, Richard Attwood, drove Piper’s car which was upgraded to 1970 K-specs together with local hero John Love but they retired with a failure in the brake system.
