1981 DRM Championship Bergischer Löwe Zolder – BMW M1 Turbo
The BMW M1 is famous from the Procar Championship. Many M1 were also converted to Group 5 and IMSA GTX specs often based on the Procar version. Several chassis builders (such as March, Sauber, Martini) built special wide body space frame cars but these were still using the normally aspirated engine of the Procar. Schnitzer did something else; they built a car for the German DRM Championship and provided it with a turbo engine. This delivered up to 850 hp in racing trim and even 1000 hp in qualifying. It was quick but the immense power had some negative effects on the drivability and reliability. Hans J. Stuck drove it in this livery in the first few races of the 1981 season. In the season opener at Zolder, the turbo collapsed after only 2 laps.
