Ferrari has always been famous for its V12 engines, but also achieved great success with their V8 powered cars starting with the famous F40. More recent the cars in the GT2/GTE/GT3 won many races and championships. The newest car in this range is the 296 that has downsized and is powered by a V6 twin-turbo.

Ferrari 308

1984 Rally Piancavallo, Ferrari 308 GTB
Ahead of the 1983 season, Italian rally team Pro Motor Sport, commissioned specialist company Michelotto to create a Group B version of the Ferrari 308 GTB, which had previously been campaigned in Group 4 specification. Michelotto built 4 models based on older street going versions that had fiber glass body panels. A four-valve engine was developed that delivered around 40 hp more than the 2-valve version of the Group 4 car.The cars competed merely in national events in Italy and Spain until the factory developed Group B cars appeared. Michelotto continued to develop Ferraris and was strongly involved in the production of the 308 GT/M and 288 GTO which were intended for circuit racing and not for use in rallies.

Ferrari 348

1993 Italian Super GT, Ferrari 348 GTC
In 1993, the Italian GT Championship was one of the leading Championships in Europe. In category I the battle went on between a Jaguar XJ220 and a small armada of Ferrari F40. Division II was the territory of Oscar Larrauri in the Jolly Club Ferrari 348 GTC who took many class wins and finished second in the championship.

1993 Bologna Motor Show, Ferrari 348 GTC
The Bologna Motor Show had some outdoor activity too, sometimes even with Formula 1 cars competing in a super special. In 1993, Roland Asch drove one of the Ferrari’s from the Italian GT Championship and provided some nice pictures.

1994 Le Mans 24h, Ferrari 348 GTC
Behind the battle between the prototypes and Dauer GT1, a divers field of GT2 cars battled for class honors. Porsche 911, Honda NSX, Callaway Corvette, Alpine, Venturi and two Ferrari 348 GT Competitizione. In the end, Porsche teams filled the podium in GT2 and this all Spanish Ferrari crew finished 4th in class.

Ferrari F40

The Ferrari F40 was a supercar developed from the Group B Ferrari 288 in the mid ’80’s with a 3-liter V8 twin turbo engine.
Street versions have been in production between 1987 and 1992. Michelotto built three race cars and afterwards Evolution versions were developed for competition use in JGTC, BPR and Le Mans GT1.

1990 IMSA Watkins Glen, Ferrari F40 LM
GT’s almost disappeared from the race tracks in Europe by the end of the 80’s. In the USA GT’s could be found: In IMSA GTO Nissan ZX and Mazda RX7 race Mercury Cougars and the works Audi Quattro. French Ferrari distributor Pozzi judged it a fine platform to race it’s Ferrari super car, the F40. In 1988 it raced once and in 1990 two cars were entered in the championship. At Watkins Glen it finished 2nd despite a blown engine in the last lap.

1994 Japanese GT Championship Mine, Ferrari F40 GT
1994 Was the second year of the Japanese GT Championship. The grid was a miraculous mix of exotic cars: Lots of Nissan Skylines, but also Porsche 911 GT2 and a former group C 962, Toyota Supra and a Ferrari F40. The former Jolly Club F40 wearing #40 was entered byTeam Taisan and won the final race of the season at Mine. In that race, Team Taisan even entered this second F40 in the well known black and red Yokohama livery.

1994 Vallelunga 6h, Ferrari F40 GTE
The Vallelunga 6-hour race was a race outside the Italian GT Championships. It nevertheless attracted a few good entrants such as this Strandell Ferrari F40 that also ran in the BPR Series and at Le Mans. It took pole, set the fastest lap won with 5 laps over the second car, A Ferrari 348 GTC.

1995 Le Mans 24h, Ferrari F40 GTE
The Ferrari F40 made, as old as it already was, a career in the BPR Series where it was quite successful. In Le Mans however, it never finished higher than 6th. This French Aldix Racing F40 finished 12th in this year’s race.

1996 Ferrari F40 LM Marlboro
I haven’t found much information about this car; as far as I know it doesn’t have a racing history. It is advertised as a 1996 Ferrari F40 LM, but only 19 LM have been built, so if it’s a LM it should be clear which one this is. I think it is a normal street-legal Ferrari F40, the type you see every day (…ahum) but nicely decorated as a LM in Marlboro livery. I also have no idea if the model is based on the car in the pictures. If you have more information, please leave a comment.

The Porsche 911 GT3 is the car to beat, but the best contender to do so is the Ferrari 360 Modena. The successor of the Ferrari 355 is not as reliable as the Porsche in endurance racing, but the speed is there. The JMB entry had to retire unfortunately.

2007 FIA GT Championship, Ferrari 430 GTC
The all new Ferrari 430 GTC is the successor of the 360, and much more powerful with is 4.3 liter V8. This #50 car dominated the FIA GT Championship with 6 wins in 10 races. Its teammates took another two wins. Müller and Vilander took the GT2 driver title and of course the team title was for AF Corse.

2009 Vallelunga 6 hours, Ferrari 430 GT3
Nine times motor bike world champion Valentino Rossi is also very capable in handling cars. In his younger years he drove kart before he switched to two-wheelers. He even once tested a Ferrari Formula 1 and often competes in rallye or GT racing. With this beautiful Ferrari 430 GT3 he raced in the non-championship 6-hour race at Vallelunga in a mixed grid of prototypes and GT’s. So nice to see him still using his motorcycle number 46 also on the cars.

2011 Nürburgring 24h, Ferrari P4/5 Competizione
James Glickenhaus had the first of the Ferrari P4/5 built by Pininfarina in 2006, the car was inspired by the 1967 Ferrari 330 P4 and was based upon the 12 cylinder Enzo. This competition version has been built by N-Technology from a Ferrari 430 Scuderia. It was set up as a GT3 car, but of course not homologated so it had to start in a special category E1-XP2. Amongst the drivers were two former F1 stars, Larini and Salo.

The Ferrari 458 Italia is the successor of the F430. It’s 4.5 liter V8 is again more powerful and delivers more torque. The AF Corse was the best Ferrari at Le Mans this year, it finished 2nd in class behind the winning Corvette. This JWM Motorsport car finished only 9th in GTE Pro.

2012 Le Mans 24h, Ferrari 458 Italia GTC
Italian AF Corse is supported by Ferrari and one of the top teams in GTE classes in WEC and at Le Mans. #51 Is their best team with a very strong driver line-up. But Giancarlo Fisichella crashed on Wednesday during practice. The chassis was beyond repair, so a replacement chassis was bought in and had to be built up. In the race everything went perfect, the red racer started in the back, took the lead in GTE Pro in the 10th hour and kept it until the finish.

2017 Daytona 24h, Ferrari 488 GTE
In 2016 Ferrari introduced the 488 GTE as successor of the 458 Italia GTC. It doesn’t have a 4.8 liter engine as the name may suggest, but a 4.0 liter V8 twin turbo. Risi Competitione, an American Ferrari team entered a 488 GTE with three factory drivers behind the wheel. They finished 3rd in GTE LM, only 3 seconds behind the winning Ford GT. In between them a Porsche that was ahead of the Ferrari only 0.2 seconds …

Iron Dames was founded in 2018 by Deborah Mayer with the goal of supporting and promoting women in motorsport. The fast ladies raced Le Mans for the first time in a Ferrari from Kessel Racing sponsored by watch maker Hublot. The team would drive Ferrari, Porsche, Lamborghini and again Porsche and become a force to reckon with.

2021 DTM Championship, Ferrari 488 GT3
Instead of the planned technical merger with Japanese Super GT 500, DTM switched policy and since 2021, GT3 cars are the standard. Red Bull junior Liam Lawson got the opportunity to compete the entire season in an AF Corse prepared Ferrari 488. He won the first race at Monza and would win two more at the Red Bull Ring. In the last race of the season, Lawson got crashed out by Audi driver Kelvin van der Linde and because some Mercedes drivers slowed down to let Maxi Götz pass, Liam lost the championship by only 3 points.

2023 Nürburgring 24h, Ferrari 296 GT3
German Frikadelli Racing is a long time contender in the Nürburgring Endurance Series and the 24-hour race. They have been a Porsche client for many, many years. In 2023 Frikadelli switched to the new Ferrari 296 GT3. A new developed car with a more compact 3.0 liter V6 twin turbo engine that is also the basis for the LM Hybrid 499P. It brings Frikadelli great success as they win the most grueling 24-hour race.

2024 DTM Championship, Ferrari 296 GT3
Thierry Vermeulen is the son of Raymond Vermeulen who is the manager of Max Verstappen. He races in the DTM championship in an Emil Frey Ferrari 296 GT3 with support from Verstappen.com and Red Bull. His best result this season is 5th at the Sachsenring, in the championship he ends in 15th place.

2024 Le Mans 24h, Ferrari 296 GT3
The GTE category came to an end and the ACO turned to GT3 as its successor. The GT3 platform is incredibly popular and competitive. Mike Wainwright’s GR Racing had been racing Porsches for many years, but in the new format he switched to Ferrari. It didn’t bring the success the team had with the Porsches. The car wasn’t ready for the practice and qualifying and had to start from the back.
