The success story of the 1973 Martini Porsche begins in the USA, in Daytona. The evolution version of the Porsche 911, the 2.7-liter Carrera RSR was not yet homologated as a GT in January 1973, so the car drove to its first big victory in the sports car category.

1973 Daytona 24h, Porsche 911 Carrera RSR
This overall win from the Brumos crew win in the Daytona 24-hour race is one of the greatest achievements.

1973 Vallelunga 6 hours, Porsche 911 Carrera RSR
The second race in the World Championship was in Vallelunga, Italy. The Martini Porsches were allowed in GT by now and finished first and second in class.

1973 Dijon 1000 km, Porsche 911 Carrera RSR
The third race of the World Sportscar Championship was in Dijon, again the Martini RSR won the GT class.

1973 Le Mans 4h, Porsche 911 Carrera RSR
The Martini Porsche competed in the 4 hours of Le Mans, a non-championship race held in April on the same track as the 24-hour race. Van Lennep and Müller took pole position and the overall victory ahead of a Porsche 910 prototype and a fair amount of Ferrari 365 GTBs.

1973 Targa Florio, Porsche 911 Carrera RSR
Round 6 of the world championship was the infamous Targa Florio at Sicily. It was more a rally than a race; 1 lap being over 70 km over mountain roads and across villages. The #107 finished 6th, but it was actually not the original #107 which had been crashed heavily by Pucci during practice.

1973 Targa Florio, Porsche 911 Carrera RSR
Both #8 and #9 Porsches were entered as sports cars because they were fitted with bigger brakes and a larger rear spoiler than homologated in GT. Both teams ran without problems and took advantage from crashes and technical failures from the Ferrari and Alfa Romeo prototypes.

Bigger rear wings and wider tires

1973 Le Mans 24h, Porsche 911 Carrera RSR ‘widebody’
The Martini sponsored factory Porsche RSR showed another evolution at Le Mans. The rear spoiler that looked quite improvised in the Targa Florio was now integrated in the even wider rear bodywork. The cars had wider tires, better brakes and a new 3.0 liter engine that delivered about 330 hp – 30 more than the 2.8 liter version. Of Course the cars were entered as sports cars again.

1973 Zeltweg 1000 km, Porsche 911 Carrera RSR ‘longtail’
Again Porsche entered the car in the prototype category. By doing this they had the possibility to experiment with aerodynamics and rear wheel sizes, not permitted in GT class. At the fast track of Zeltweg Porsche used this ‘longtail’ version which gave more top speed and stability.

Turbo!

1974 Le Mans 24h, Porsche 911 Carrera RSR Turbo
Porsche had experience with the turbocharged Can-Am 917’s. For the 1974 season Porsche built a turbocharged 2.1 liter that delivered 500 hp which is more than they could extract from the normally aspirated 3.0 liter. The engine would later return in the Porsche 936 and win Le Mans in 1976 and 1977.

Safari

1978 Safari Rally, Porsche 911 SC
Porsche 911’s were successful on the racetrack, but Porsche wanted to prove themselves also in the terrain. Jean-Pierre Nicolas won the rally with a Peugeot 504 V6 Coupe, after he had won the Montecarlo with a 911 earlier that year. The two Martini 911’s finished 2nd and 4th in the Safari rally, due to problems with the shock absorbers of the car that had a huge ground clearance of 28 cm. Swedish duo Waldegard and Thorzelius finished 4th, the other Martini Porsche was driven by Kenians Vic Preston jr and John Lyall who finished in second place.
