The Porsche 996 is the fifth generation Porsche 911 and is completely different to the models it succeeded. A whole new platform was developed which it shared with the Porsche Boxter (986), the engine was no longer air-cooled and had 4 valves per cylinder. Not everybody was a fan of the design of the “fried egg” head lamps which returned to round ones when the 997 came out. The 996 was sleeker than the 993 and the windshield was much more raked giving it better aerodynamics.
1998 Porsche Supercup, Porsche 911 GT3 Cup
A revolution took place. After having built air-cooled flat-6 engines for 35 years, Porsche introduced a water-cooled engine in their new 996. Patrick Huisman won his second of 4 championships in a row in the new 996 GT3. By doing this, he is still the most successful driver in the Supercup.

Porsche built the GT3 R, based on the new water cooled 996. Two cars made their racing debut in the new GT class at Le Mans in 1999, the Manthey prepared car won its class in front of the Champion Racing car.

In 2000, Dieter Quester is back in Daytona with support from Red Bull. This is the RWS car that usually drove in the FIA GT series in Europe. But like many other teams it competed in several US races like Sebring and Daytona.

2001 Le Mans 24h, Porsche 911 GT3 R
Freisinger Motorsport is one of the German top teams that used the Porsche 911 GT3. The GT’s did excellent in Le Mans, the Freisinger team finished 7th overall and second in the category, just behind a similar car from Seikel Motorsport. One of the drivers of the Freisinger car is Gunnar Jeanette who’s would race Porsches in his own team also. In the last qualifying session on Thursday, Gunnar had a heavy crash , the Freisinger team needed the entire Friday and Saturday morning to rebuild the car. Romain Dumas had to start from the pit lane, so finishing second in class must feel like a victory.

2003 Spa-Francorchamps 24h, Porsche 911 GT3 RS
Freisinger Motorsport was the surprise winner of the 24-hour of Spa in 2003. Their 911 GT3 (996) was entered in N-GT while in the GT category cars such as the V12 Ferrari 550 Maranello, Dodge Viper GTS-R and Lister Storm competed. Because of the rain these GT cars couldn’t profit from their powerful engines, and the ‘Best of the Rest’, the BMW Ferrari Maranello finished no less than 8 laps behind.

Patrick Huisman won the Supercup title 4 years in a row between 1997 and 2000, but in 2003 Porsche Junior driver Frank Stippler was the fastest. Huisman was still competitive, he won 1 race and scored 4 more podiums. He finished 4th in the championship.

2004 Daytona 24h, Porsche 911 GT3 Cup
The Flying Lizard team entered two 911s in the GT category. A 911 GT3 RS that withdrew before the start and a near standard 911 GT3 Cup. It was only the second season of the new Daytona Prototypes and these were not yet reliable or fast. A DP Doran Pontiac did win, but GT Porsches finished 2nd and 3rd. This Cup car finished in third, in the same lap as an Orbit Racing 911 GT3 RS.

Alex Job Racing is one of the American Porsche teams that is supported by the factory, the other is The Racers Group. In the ALMS races, Alex Job is more successful but The Racers Group has won two 24-hour races. In the German VLN endurance championship at the Nürburgring the most fantastic cars compete. Older DTM, ALMS and V8 Star cars but also this 4WD Porsche 996 turbo which is called “Turbinchen”. Jürgen and Uwe Alzen won the 6-hour Grenzland Rennen. For the Nürburgring 24h they achieved pole-position but finished 10th.

The Gordon / Gulf sponsored GT3 RSR finished 6th in GT2 at the wet track of the LMES round at Francorchamps in 2005. Surprising GT2 winner was the LNT TVR, while the overall victory was achieved by a Zytek LMP1. In 2006 this car drove at Le Mans in the famous Gulf livery.

This Prospeed 911 GT3 is painted in the way the Porsche 917/20 was back in 1971. It is by far not as revolutionary as the original pig but this one is reliable. The Belgian team finished 7th overall in the 24 hour race at Zolder.

2010 Japanese Super GT, Porsche 911 GT3 RSR
Hatsune Miku is very popular in Japan. She is a hologram projection that performs for a live audience together with a real band. She also sponsors the Porsche from Goodsmile Racing in the GT300 category of the Super GT Championship. The team drove two different cars this season. It started with this older 996 version, the second part they drove the newer 997 Porsche.
